Monitor 70 with no subwoofer?

Hey guys,

I recently moved into a new place (first home/condo) and the place does not have a good place and space for my sub.

My current set-up:
Yamaha RX-V1900
Monitor 60 up front
CS2 Center
PSW10 sub
no rears

I know this is not the most loved sub on here but it does a decent job filling the room. I wanted to know if it would be worth getting rid of the M60s and the sub and getting M70s instead with no sub. Would my receiver be able to drive the M70 and give me plenty of bass given the bigger drivers? Not looking to get an amp tho. I usually do 70/30 music/movies.

    I dont really think so. Thats a good AVR but small drivers dont always dig deep enough. I have a5s which have 2 6.5" drivers. Even though I have them connected to my Carver m1.0t (200wpc) which added considerably more bass, Its still lacking in the lower end. I am considering getting a psw111 for 2ch music and use my dsw600 for movies only.

    I mainly listen to hard rock, heavy metal, alternative, and whatever category Phish falls into. My 70s minus the sub handled the low-end from that music to my complete satisfaction. Not that I don't like hip-hop, trance, rap, etc., but I don't listen to any of that at all. So, I can't say how these speakers would perform in those situations.

    There was, however, a considerable difference between sub and no sub when it came to home theater applications. I guess that goes without saying.

    I tried the M60s with no sub and they sound nice in 2 channel mode. The lack of bass is evident though. If the M70s fill the room a little better due to the bigger drivers it'll be fantastic.

    What are your thoughts on wireless subwoofers? Possible recommendations? Budget $500

    With a $500 sub budget...

    Look into the def tech supercube series and the Velodyne Spl series. Small, musical and can throw a large amount of bass for the size. I picked up a "refurbished" SPL 1000 II from velodyne for $499 shipped to my door...

    If you go used, they can be had for even less.

    Wife doesn't approve the $500 budget. I found a PSWI225 for under $200... how is that sub?

    Can't do the Polk PSW505 or Bic F-12 for a few dollars more?

    If so, I would go with one of those.

    I would probably lean toward the Bic F-12 for movies and the Polk PSW505 for music.

    Currently running a pair of M70s, a CS2 and occasionally the PSWI225 off of an Onkyo TX-SR607. I live on a 2nd floor apartment with wood flooring and high ceilings so the acoustics can be tricky. 80/20 TV/Music.

    In regard to the TV being the main focus of my setup...the CS2 combined with Monitor 70s (no rears) handles bass very well with no sub. It's great to have the PSWI225 for those times when I'm watching a movie and want to turn it up a notch and flip the sub on for a fuller experience, etc...but the 70s without the PSWI225 can stand on their own just fine.

    The Yamaha is pumping out what, 130watts per channel? Its looks to be a good piece of hardware. I can drive my Monitor70s with 95watts each and they sound great. The bass will be fine for music. With four drivers and the bass turned a bit high they will amaze you. How ever in HT mode you will lack that deep rumble. Even if you configure that Yamaha to do 5.0 surround sound it will not give you deep base in HT mode.
    So for 2ch audio the m70 has lots and lots of bass but in HT I would get a sub.

    Some of you guys must have some magical set ups. The M70's I owned needed lots of power to sound great and to make decent bass. When I first had mine, they were driven off my AVR which was 135wpc with just two channels driven, anything over that and the power drops.

    I had my kid over and put in a Best of Stevie Ray Vaughn CD, after a few minutes, my kid asks, "shouldn't is sound better than that?"

    Once I started feeding the M70's 200wpc, they opened up and sounded much better. When I sold them, I demoed them with an amp pushing 300wpc through them, they sounded so good, I almost didn't sell them. And, that was the first time I heard them putting out some real bass. Even the buyer was relieved that he didn't have to buy a sub right away, but I warned him, if he got them home and they didn't sound as good, it was because I was pumping all that power through them.

    If you want M70's and you want to them to perform their best, you've got to feed them, and since you're not considering an amp, my recommendation is to keep your 60's and get a decent sub, too bad about your restrictions, an Epic Legend could have done you some good.

    I liked the pswi225 more than the psw10. Tighter and I felt it distorted less. Plus the wireless feature is really nice.

    Will I be able to squeeze more bass out of the M60 or M70s with Yamaha RX-V1900 and Yamaha A-S500 AMP?
    That would be 130W + 85W = 215W per channel in stereo mode.

    How do you get the AVR internal Amp and the external to add up the power like that? Are you planning on doing bi amping the speakers or some other secret sauce?

    I guess you didn't read my post. I'll give it you like this; the M70 is rated 275 @ max power. Give it 300wpc and you'll get in your face bass with movies and music.

    It's just not cost effective in your case, I'd just stick to getting a better sub.
