would i get better esults from my xbox with an hdmi, or vga and digital optical

    HDMI - this keeps both signals digital. Otherwise you are using analog signal for the video. Although, now you've got me wondering - is the xbox even high def? If not - it may not matter a whole lot. But why not just use a single cable rather than two?

    It's not as simple as that. With video games latency can be a huge factor. If you're concerned only about the quality of the graphics (watching Netflix, etc.), then yes, HDMI would be better. But if you are concerned about latency and gaming performance, then I'd go with VGA or even component video. Less decoding for the TV to do = less latency = better gaming.

    I thought Xbox 360 could only output 1080p picture through the HDMI output?

    I guess 2 questions need to be answered before a good answer can be given. First, is the an original xbox (as it seems to be stated) or a 360? Secondly - are you connecting this to a monitor with HDMI, or a TV?

    See post #3. Depends on what you're after. Picture quality = HDMI. Gaming performance = VGA.

    I dunno. I have my 360 hdmi into my receiver then to my tv. I have zero lag between when I do something and when it happens. Now if I turn on all that processing crap on the tv, I lag like nothing else. I think it has a lot to do with the quality of tvs. Crappy tvs tend to lag more then higher end models.

    If you can turn the processing off then that will reduce the lag over HDMI, but not completely eliminate it. Actually on crappy TVs without any fancy video processing the lag can be lesser than that of a more expensive TV, if you can't turn the processing off on the expensive TV. Some TV manufacturers will put a PC mode or game mode option that you can enable for an input to reduce lag as much as possible, but HDMI will still likely be a few ms slower than using an analog input.

    The best way to test for video lag is with a game like Rock Band 2. If you have Rock Band 2 and a Rock Band 2 guitar, you can use it to automatically test for lag and it will give you the exact numbers in ms. The Rock Band 2 guitar has both a light sensor and a microphone built into it, which is used to calibrate the game. When the game does the calibration, you hold the guitar up to the screen while it flashes white a few times, and the console measures the video lag based on that. This way you can directly compare all of the various input options you have available and decide which one gives you the best results. It can also measure audio lag.

    Of course you can avoid video lag entirely if you use a CRT. Someday I hope consumers will realize that having a thin, lightweight panel is not as desirable as having the best possible picture quality/response time and demand that CRTs be made once more. Until then I am hoarding them.

    Run the HDMI into your tv and then run the Optical out of the tv to the SSP. This will sync the audio and picture perfectly and you will get nice clear dolby pro logic 2.
    also go into the xbox settings and setup the audio settings to dolby 5.1

    ramzet, thanks for the advice, and cant change the tv settings right now, the tv was free from a friend who got restationed elsewhere, no remote right now, looking to buy one online, the blu ray remote will only change channels or power on/off and voluume
