I'm going to get it. I Decided from the start that I was going to collect the EE's. The DTSES is a big sale for me. Not to mention reference PQ.

Not to mention that the EE's fill in with so much more story than the theaterical, it's a no brainer purchase if your a fan of the films.

I'm all over this one too.

I just read a review at dvdreview.com and the reviewer pretty much said it's the newest reference DVD on the market. He couldn't find one single flaw with the release (PQ, Audio, extras, etc...). He also said the 40 minutes of added footage made this movie much much better than the theatrical release.

Yep, it looks like all the major places around Baltimore (CC, BB, Walmart and Target) have it for $25.

Looks like when I get out of work at 2 am, I'll stop at Walmart on my way home to grab it.

    This is gonna smoke!

I understand that Peter Jackson was given about $300 million bucks total to do all 3 of these films.

Here is the worldwide take so far for each flick (not even sure if these include DVD and video sales):

    FOTR - $860.2 million

    TTT - $920.4 million

ROTK is poised to break the $1 billion mark.

I think P.J. can pretty much get what he wants now at New Line!

The dts 6.1 ES discrete soundtrack crushed the DD theatrical version.

Better and more engaging surround effects, higher levels of ambience during quiet passages, and the bass was more realistic and not overcooked.

Also, the elephant attack scene was not overly harsh like the DD version was.

doc, did you notice the the dts level is about several dB lower than dd? I wonder why?

I just finished watching it last night. With the extra 43 minutes, the story flows better, compared to theaterical version. These extras provide closures on several questions I have from FOTR. All in all, enjoyed this one very much!
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Yes, it is lower in volume. We watched it at -10 (Reference Level = 00). The DD version we watched at around -13 or -14.

Why? Couldn't say. Maybe the soundtrack was so dynamic that DTS felt the need to lower the mastering level to keep the peaks from distorting. I honestly think this is what I'm hearing on the DD version of the elephant ambush scene. That is very hard on the ears.
