Seeing The Who tonight. 3rd row right-of-center. Wuhoo! Who Cares if they're like 80? I've never seen them and am really looking forward to this.
Sorry about the over-exuberance,
Craig

Hopefully they get the sound system right. Pete's lost a lot of his hearing over the years, and wears hearing aids on stage. He walked off the set in the middle of the encore the other night, because apparently his monitors were so loud that they were blasting his ears away through the hearing aids.

I've seen them more times than I can count. Probably the most memorable show was when I saw them three nights after Entwhistle died. It was the first show they played after he passed. The 'show must go on' mentality was very admirable, but there were a lot of skeptics thinking that they couldn't pull it off without him. Pino Palladino stood in for him, he was Pete's bassist in his solo band. They brought him up to the majors on a moment's notice, and I have to say that he did a fantastic job given the circumstances. He's still the bassist for this current incarnation of The Who.

If you've never seen them live, then get prepared to be particularly blown away by the drummer. We all know the history, Keith Moon died in the '70's, then Kenny Jones joined the band. No disrespect to the Small Faces, but Jones just didn't do it for The Who. Then the band had a decent-length hiatus, and then came back again with another drummer, I forget his name. Nothing special. But then........ Along came one Zak Starkey. Son of one Richard Starkey. The same Richard Starkey who, of course, goes by the stage name of Ringo Starr. Now I consider myself a bit of a Beatles freak, but I've never really thought of Ringo as the best drummer of all time. One would think that his son would play just like his dad, which would be a bit tame by Who standards. However.... It was not Ringo who taught Zak how to play the drums. It was Keith Moon! Zak grew up calling him "Uncle Keith". In my opinion, Zak has elevated The Who's live act to it's former glory. He is absolutely a top notch drummer, and plays The Who's music in very much the same flavor as Uncle Keith did. You will be impressed.

The big question mark, in my opinion, will be the vocals. I've actually been to a show where Roger's voice just completely gave out on him, and he had to leave the show for the encore and they improvised a couple of Pete songs to close the set. Pete apologized on behalf of Roger, but his voice was just shot. And the Who don't do no lip-syncing...

This isn't the first time they've come around with a Quadrophenia tour. They did two tours of it in the 90's, I think I saw three shows between the two tours. One of the greatest albums of all time, and it makes for an awesome live show!

If Roger is on tonight and they've sorted out Pete's monitors, then you should be in for quite a treat.
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

I'm going to see them later in the month. Can 't wait. I saw the Who back when Kenny Jones was drumming. I know Kenny was not Keith, who I consider the best drummer of all time, but that concert still rocked. Thanks nspindel for the Who history lesson. I'm a big Who fan, but the Beatles are still my favorite, so the Zak Starkey connection was great to learn!!!

Seen them many times, mostly on a farewell tour:mrgreen:. Anyways a great show. With regards to Kenney Jones on drums, while he's not Moon, listen to the drum solo on Rod Stewarts "I'm losing you". One of my favorites....

Yeah, anyway! I'm going to the Philly show in a few weeks. Saw them on the last tour & Roger's voice was a bit shaky at times. Was a great show otherwise. Hope this one is just as good or better!

Sorry, I was out of town and then too busy to sit down til now.

Show was fantastic. I thought the sound was excellent and not overly loud. I usually plug up my ears, but forgot this time and it still wasn't too loud where we were standing. I'll try to post one of the terrible pics I took. Daltrey's voice was strong. I detected no problems. After one challenging segment (forget what exactly) Roger looked at Pete and raised his eyebrows like "whew". Wasn't sure if that was "whew, that went well" or "whew, that was rough" or both. I didn't notice anything being cut short or out of the ordinary. My thought at the end of Quadrophenia was "that was just perfect". It really was outstanding. I've never been to an album-oriented concert and I really enjoyed this as Quad was always one of my favorites. They seemed to enjoy the challenge, and it made the hits all the sweeter at the end.

You were spot on re: Starkey. Amazing. I sorta wish they had moved him forward a tad just because he was so good and constantly entertaining. He was well lighted though, so I could see him very well and found myself watching him much more than I usually watch the drummer. Definitely resembles Ringo in appearance, very skillful, and a perfect choice for the group. Can't imagine finding a better fit.

The bassist seemed to sometimes channel Entwistle (with a little more movement) and was skillful, but IMO, was under-emphasized in the show. It may have just been that he was on the opposite side of the stage. Pete's brother (forget his name) was excellent. I kept saying he was like "Pete Jr." to my wife - had no idea it was his brother until the intros near the end. LOL. Everyone, including the horns, was focused on getting the music just right. It was an interesting dynamic. I REALLY loved how the old footage and sound was integrated for the tributes. It was seamlessly and lovingly done. Very creative and genuine.

I got tickets for a buddy to repay him for all the camping out for tickets he did when we were in school. He has seen The Who a few times starting in the 70's. It far exceeded his expectations. All'n'all an outstanding show. I'm going to be in Vegas when they play there in February, and I'm going to try to make that show as well.

    Craig

Sorry- can't figure out how to reduce size. Not sure if this'll work.

Here's another crummy pic. It is a cool looking amp. I've never seen anything like it. White in color and looked like it belonged in the 70's/80's.

Anyone know anything about that thing?

Saw the Who last night. Amazing concert!!! The old guys realy put on a great show and never missed a beat or note. Pete was still wind milling his guitar and Roger was still slinging the mic. I thought the John Entwistle bass solo was realy well done and Keith Moon singing Bell Boy was cool. I'm glad they still rocked out with a few of the classics after finishing the Quadrophenia album.

A side note: a friend of mine was also there, so we were texting before/after. He texts me and says he's in the section below the balcony where we were sitting. He says to look for "the gleam off the top of his head". I looked around and I think 50% of the men in the crowd were bald.....very "mature" crowd.

Another observation as a sign of the times: when the auditorium was dark you could see the glow of smart phones all over the stadium. Used to be that recording devices were a big NO in concerts. Now anyone with a smart phone can record video, sound, take pics and send instantly, etc.

And yes - someone was smoking weed in the crowd. Imagine that at a Who concert .......
