Projectors: The ultimate setup for gaming and movies, does it really exist?

So in all the reading, demonstrations at the local dealer and owning various projectors I have came to the conclusion that such a projector does not yet exist. There are many great projectors out there and they all have their strengths and weaknesses in. There may be a projector that has great 3D like the benq w7000 but just not enough brightness for it to be stong enough in 2D performance. There is also the stellar 2D kings from jvc rs series that has that black hole sucks you in the image type of picture but the 3D is the worst out there. Then finally the epson 5010 that had great contrast and great 3D with best in class brightness making it the best all rounder next to the lesser bright sony hw30 3d

I choose to go with the epson 5010 and was in love at first sight as I fired up a 3D movie first time around. I always heard things like "best in class" or " black's black and colors pop" but after taking it for a lengthily test drive I began to rethink. I was not impressed at all with the black level on it at all as the black bars on a cinemascope movie were still that ugly shade of annoying grey that distracts you from the experience. My observations were vastly different from what any professional reviewer had written down.

Here is my gripe though, every single projector I have mentioned has one flaw and the one function that forced me to let go of my epson. They all suck b@lls when it comes to playing a FPS online against some die hard gamers. I thought I was in for some awesome 3D gaming that only epson could deliver with its 2400 light cannon output but was mistaken so I am back to square one and empty the tea cup

I went out to view some projectors today and had another look at the jvc rs 45 55 65 and was just blown away by the sheer depth and luscious color contrast. None of them had the brightness I want with bad lag times. I would not even get the benefit of the 65 and 55 with my white walls but man did the jvc rs45 look good compared to my epson on a dark scene it just kicked a$$

Here is the twist though after leaving the demo room where I was in awe from the jvc's, I then just walk into my other fav lil store where I saw a great looking bright 3d Demo. The 2D on it was nothing like I am used to but it was so bright I had to ask more. The dealer passed me a pair of 3D glasses and swapped out the disk from a panny bdp, holy crap was this projector bright and the 3D was great. The dealer asked did I notice anything different so I though I was being smart and said "yup this is a dlp because I can see rainbows" anything else he asked me? I honestly could not add so I asked whats diff? This model is hdmi 1.4 and its only 720p. Holy crap I thought and he then went on to inform me that it has 3000 lumens of brightness. I asked the model and it turns out to be an Optoma gt750 for $735 after tax, Thats great I thought so I joking asked him what the gaming lag was on it(dudes around 55) he then replied it has zero gaming lag. I was lmao as I though he was sh#t'n me but he then showed me a spec sheet and it is advertised as a zero gaming lag pj

Well after that I have come home with my thoughts buzzing having solved what may be my ultimate solution to 2D stellar high contrast and zero lag time big bright 3D gaming. With the price of the optoma 750 and a jvc rs55 or 45 I can finally have my cake and eat it with this combo. I would not even have to mount two projectors because the optoma 750 is a short throw projector and can put 100 inches from only 5 feet away. Another great thing is it has built in speakers so it can be moved from room to room for casual gaming

If I never happened to stumble upon this today I think I may have ended up either waiting around for another year or choosing another projector that does everything in a so so fashion like the new panny 8000

Good read. If your pocket allows, stick with JVC. Optoma has always made bright units, but their black levels tend to suffer a bit more when compared with Epson & Panasonic.

You are very right sherardp, The optoma has really horrible blacks but I only do gaming on a console and most games are so bright and colorful that they don't command a high contrast. This is why I am pleased because I can finally buy a jvc projector just for movies and have another projector just for video games in 2D and 3D
