What exactly does it do? Isn't calibrating with a SPL meter enough?

If you want to play around with calibrating the picture, look for a copy of Monsters Inc. or Finding Nemo. In the setup/extras look for the THX Optimizer, then go to the video part. You can then walk through adjusting your sharpness, brightness, colors etc. It will display screens that are made for making certain adjustments.

For many people, this is good enough. If you want to go hog wild you can splurge for the more expensive calibration discs.

I just received my DVE Monday. Haven't really had time to mess around with it but I did scan threw it a little. Almost looks like a complicated mess.:D But I'm sure I'll mess around with it this weekend.

Ya'll spend hours with it - just sit back and listen to all it has to offer. It is very interesting and you will learn alot.
One interesting point they make in it is all the new tv flat screen hype and how many don't measure up. That many of the "regular" or semi flat tv's produce a better picture. One of those marketing falsehoods.
