So my wife's boss, who has more money than he knows what to do with, wanted me to come help him hook up a DVD player at his house. He knows I am some what of a gear hound. And tells me that he has a receiver I can have for helping him. Says it is "too complicated" for him. He only listens to 2 channel music and prefers his old Pioneer receiver and Bozak speakers.
Well I spend all of 15 minutes correctly hooking everything up at his house today. And he gives me this AVR. I am kinda stoked because I was looking for something to decode DTS. Not high end by many heres standards but I am not complaining.

Those 600 series are a bread and butter model for Onkyo. Always have been. And the earlier models seem to be a little "warmer" sounding than the latest ones. While that is only a 6.1 AVR with no HDMIs, it does have 5.1 analog inputs so if you have a blu-ray that decodes and outputs analog multi-channel you're in business (Dolby HD and HD DTS).
I've always liked Onkyo AVRs. Own two at the moment. My bedroom TX-SR 604 and the main HT TX-SR 805 (Polk speakers all the way around). I actually like my 2.1 TX-SR 604 32" HDTV mini HT bedroom set up quite a bit (lots of power). Heck, it even sounds good with "music" (Two RTi-4s and a 100 watt 8" sub).
Have fun!

Congrats!
I've owned a TX-SR500, TX-SR702, TX-NR609, TX-SR806 and the older models definitely sounded warmer than the newer ones. You have a great receiver there, it will do both movies and music with ease.
Enjoy!polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

I am currently using a new Onkyo TX-NR3010 which replaced a slightly older TX-NR3008. Before those, I had a TX-NR 717. I can say that without a doubt, the higher the model level, the warmer the sound (for music). No big surprise there. So if you want warmer sound, save a little longer.Fronts:B&W 804 Diamonds, Center: B&W HTM2 Diamond, Surrounds: PolkAudio LSi F/X (4)

I went from an Onkyo TX-SR500 to a TX-SR702 to a TX-NR609 to a TX-SR806 and finally a Denon AVR-5800. Guess which one sounds the best for music? Once you get past the $3-4k mark, sound quality on music improves significantly.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

Thanks guys! I have not had the chance to hook it up yet. I am a little scared it won't have enough balls to drive my Infinity RSIIIa's though. The receiver has no preouts sadly.--Gary--

You should be fine. If you want preouts, unfortunately, you'll have to step up to the 70x series.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves
