i was able to get a crutchfield $200 credit towards a polk purchase (thanks to the forum member for the info). i was thinking of using it on a psw404, 505, or 650 to complete my system. my room is 20 X 20 with 10 ft ceiling. i will use it for 60% HT and 40% music.

still a little bit hesitant to take the plunge after reading all the mixed reviews on polk subs. is it worth it to get the polk? if so, which one would you recommend? or should i just save my money for something else?

If you want to use the credit, and Polk is your choice, get the PSW650.

i would think the 650 would work well in your large room.. with it's two 10" drivers.. it should do great. having a $200 store credit.. certainly helps out.

my theory on subs is to overbuy when you can... a large sub can always be turned down.. but a small sub can only put out so much volume. just a thought.

I'm just curious.. what does a 650 go for these days anyway?

Your room pretty much has the same volume as mine. What are your expectations for performance? Is there budget you have to stick too?

psw 650 and 505 are going for $499 at crutchfield.

in terms of performance expectations, i would like a sub that will deliver some ht thunder and blend nicely with music. it's probably a lot to ask for considering my budget is $300. i'm not an audiophile, but i do appreciate clean sound...nothing boomy.

PSW650. No offense to the other models, but its the only Polk sub worth owning IMO. It will satisfy your needs, until you get the bug for something in a whole different class.

Just buy the darn thing :)

I think the 505 is better.

I just recently asked a similar question regarding 505 vs. 650, and doc had this to say "The 505 is latest generation - more power, better driver, slot loaded."

    505 freq. response is 23-160hz
    650 freq. response is 25-180hz

    505 amp is 300watt continuous (460 peak)
    650 amp is 165watt continuous (250 peak)

The 505 will shake my theater room during some of the Matrix Reloaded scenes.

I did not know that, go figure. I will defer to Polk Thug's response, per Dr.'s suggestion. Looks like the PSW505 is a better performer.
