Just got a great deal on RTi8's and a CSi a6. Hooked them up to my yamaha rx v673 and it sounds extremely throaty. Previously had an onkyo box setup and it actually sounded better than the polks. Now, I know I'm doing something wrong here, I have the fronts and center set to large, but after re calibrating, then customizing the settings, I just can't seem to get this to improve a whole lot. I still have the old 200 watt onkyo sub and it has become non existant with the polks in play. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. I am sure someone with specific knowledge of components you have as well as what you are trying to do will chime in shortly.

I think most people here would hesitate to give any advice without knowing about the size of the room, your listening habits and how the room is furnished (Rugs or tile, hardwood). Can you expand on what "throaty" means in this situation, too? Thanks.

ypao probably did not run properly, turn ypao off and try a manual st up, run all your speakers "small" and at 80htz and set your "bass out" to "sub" and see how that sounds.

No experience with your electronics, but I've used an A6 before and I thought it was an EXCELLENT center channel speaker.

... after a little research... it looks like your AVR is rated at 90WPC with only (2) channels driven. If you have (5) speakers hooked up, you may only be giving those polks 50WPC or so. You need some MAN POWER! Unfortunately your AVR doesn't have a full set of preouts... but it does have preouts for your fronts, so you could add a (2) channel amp for your fronts, but I'd look to replace the AVR with a beefy AVR, or with a non-beefy AVR that has preouts and then add an external amp.

Again, those RTi's are sweet.. especially the A6. Don't give up!

23' wide 13' deep, 7'6" high ceiling, carpeted. From 3' from the right there is a 5'w x 7'h opening. From the left there is a 6' x 7' 6" h opening. "Throaty" to me sounds like the mains are channeled into the center. Hollow in other words. Multiple adjustments have been made and I have come to the conclusion that the sub may be the primary problem and secondary is the un matched side and rear speakers as they are the original onkyos. Can anybody second this thought? As y'all see, I'm attempting t0 build my system and would appreciate any help. I realize that the rx-v673 does not offer any pre out amp ability and would prefer ANY direction on how to improve this system. It would be a shame to waste the deals I have come across with the Polks.

Nope, just tried and that isn't it. Thank you for your input however. Setting the speakers to small only made it worse, like..............why did I get the 8's...........the center seems to overtake everything.

I would suggest, since your center seems to be running great, wire it to each of the L/R outputs. This will eliminate an AVR issue.
Have a 571, and every now and again ypao has a glitch. The mike has to be clear of any sound dampening equipment. Write down the settings, and rerun the calibration a few times. It could be an issue with the software in that particular reciever. If you get large differences in the settings, that may be your problem. 0.5 decibles would be acceptable variations.

I pretty had pretty much your setup. I have rtia5s, a6, and at one time had a v463.

Make sure all settings are back to factory for the AVR and start from scratch. There was a way to factory reset on mine. Look in your manual and see what it says.

Run the YPAO and see what you get then run some of the preset soundscapes. See if anything changes.

Stupid question but you dont have your center wired into the L/R channels do you?

I have the RX-V667, and I gave up on YPAO in my smallish room, about 15 x 14, 9' ceilings with open passageways on two perpendicular walls. Never could get the balance right.

I did a manual set up, took some trial and error to get it dialed in, but it now sounds really good. I have my front L-R mains powered by a separate power amp so the avr is only pushing the center and surrounds.

Ok, First, thanks all for your input. Started over with speakers set to small. Adjusted settings and set sub @ 180. (this drastically improved the missing lowend) Marked overall improvement, however I still continue to get what has been deemed a "nasal" effect by the significant other. Center was not wired to L/R. CSia6 is brand new. RTi8's have very little time on them. Sub definately needs replaced as the old Onkyo was from a box setup. I'm leaning towards a HSU VTF-3 MK3 after reading everywhere and not seeing anything negative. Any thoughts here? I was hoping that maybe some kind of black friday sale could produce favorable results with the sub and new surrounds. The more I read the worse it gets for this Yamaha RX V673 as it doesn't appear that it is going to be able to keep up with the speakers.
