Steely dans Gaucho gets a relisten.

Pretzel logic and aja are two of my favorite albums, although strangely enough, the sorta jazz rock of later dan stuff is not my thing.

Bought a fine vinyl copy of gaucho from music direct, played it when it first got here, put it aside.

But i have learned my lesson over time, James Mcmurtry being the latest artist i rediscovered, after just a cursory listen.

Last night I gave the side with hey nineteen another spin, very nice, will be sharing with deb tonight, late, when we need music to take our attention away from things, hoping it moves her.

I love(d) Steely Dan, but Gaucho just never did it for me.
Turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening...
    :-)

Otherwise I was and still am a fan of their classic output, and FWIW I actually quite like their first album, including some of its less-than-legendary tracks (e.g., Brooklyn Owes the Charmer, Dirty Work, and Changing of the Guard).

One of my fav Steely Dan albums. I have a 200gram Japanese Universal Records pressing of Gaucho that I'll put up against anybody's pressing. I use it as a demo here. One of my friends that wasn't familiar with Dan loved Gaucho and bought their entire catalog, only to find he didn't care for the early stuff. I like all their stuff.

It will beat any tequila story out there, and i dont mean in a good way.

I love Gaucho. I have a copy of it on DVD-A and really like the multi-channel mix. My kids are sick of it, because for some reason it is the only DVD-A in my car right now, so it gets played over and over. @scottyboy76 I truly hope that listening to Gaucho or any music is helpful for you and your wife at this difficult time. Music has a lot of power, whether it is to heal, or just to ease suffering for a few minutes, and I hope you are able to take advantage of that power.

Thanks guys your words and support mean so much, thats the honest truth.

I listened to both sides last night, loved it, deb, however, was in the back, on the phone with an old high school friend for hours, hgtv on the pio plasma with the sound turned down, which is fine, they talk about everything under the sun, old and new, and she always comes back decompressed.

BTW, I made a mistake, although i like pretzel logic, the album i was thinking of is Cant buy a thrill.

Dirty work is such a forgotten classic, and i still remember being literally mesmerized as a teen, listening to the little radio in our camper, the first time i heard Do it again.

Not exaggerating, I just sat there entranced by the rhythm and sound of it, and when it was over and the DJ started talking, It snapped my head back a little.

Up until then music had just sorta been rockin songs, something to get your blood pumping, or little jingle pop time fillers, It was a new experience for me.

And to top it all off, were not even talking about a drunk on tequila story, only had 2 shots, and no its not pukin or anything.

Aja on CD - heresy! ;-)

The licorice pizza version is the only way to fly as far as I am concerned. Heck, oldster that I am, my favorite version remains my purchased new MoFi half speed mastered ("SR/2" - Stan Riker) version from the late 1970s. Probably a little heavier sounding than current tastes in reproduction and loudspeakers would prefer, but dead quiet, dynamic and smooth like buttah.

I broke out "The Royal Scam" on vinyl last night. Since I was home alone I decided to crank up the volume a bit louder than usual. Well I was in Air Guitar/Dance heaven for the Green Earrings and Haitian Divorce. The SDA 1C's were singing and dancing right along!!

    Awesome!!!

Haven't listened to The Royal Scam in a long time.

I do want to say one thing in favor of the redbook CD (reissue) versions of the classic Steely Dan albums - the album notes are a hoot; the CDs are worth acquiring for those alone :-) (I only have a few of them).

You mean like they "were under the influence of a seemingly inexhaustible supply of whatever......"

I love The Royal Scam too. One of their more prominent guitar works albums. Along with what was mentioned, Kid Charlemagne.... Is there gas in the car?... The Larry Carlton guitar in Don't Take Me Alive.

Just a did you know that....after MCA acquired ABC Records, the MCA releases had changed the color of the album title to white.

Does it have something to do with the album being a "Master Disk", which is stamped in the run-out area of the vinyl?

Masterdisk could be the mastering/label house that pressed the LP or possibly a first pressing for MCA Records. It would be a re-release as MCA acquired ABC records in '79. The Royal Scam was released under the ABC Records label in '76. I have a copy of each label as shown in earlier post. MCA noticably marked their territory on the face of album jackets.

Seeing all the info in the dead wax should help ID it.

As an example, my ABC pressing of The Royal Scam is a fine early Allen Zentz mastering. I have two squiggly seagulls after the initials 'Az' so it was done by Brian Gardner at Allen Zentz. (There is a thread over at Steve Hoffman forum with must have Zentz pressings). So what's in your dead wax? Interesting stuff sometimes.
