That's interesting because there is one of these for sale on CL up where I am for about the current price on ebay. It is touted as something like the equivalent of a First Edition book by Dickens. In other words this seems to be, perhaps, the first or at least the first series of AR speakers offered by Vilchur and Kloss, so they're "collectors" items. The price reflects more the value of the collectible nature of the piece than its "intrinsic" value.
Some of our more knowledgeable "vintage" guys probably know more about this...hint..hint!!

Gotta love eBay..... I used to own a pair of these in like 1969, and they were good speakers for the era, I replaced them with a pair of JBL's classic 100's with the white woofer at the top of the cabinet and never looked back. They had the orange grillcloths on the JBL's and they were VERY 70's era . The JBL's just stomped the AR's for bass and soundstage, but you are comparing a two-way with a well designed 3-way with a much more sophisticated crossover.
Wonder what kind of condition the vinyl/rubber cone surrounds are in on these.... bet the material disintegrated right about the same time the flower power movement did...... :loneranger:"A Cigar is a bananna for the monkey in your soul." -
How bout these??

In case you all don't know - most of the value is in the Western Electric/Altec 755 8" fullrange driver that Villchur used as a "tweeter" in his first product, i.e., the AR-1.
It is nice to see AR-1s not gutted for their 755s once in a while...
EDIT: Those TADs should be top-class. Whether they're worth 75 kilosmackers, I cannot judge - but the TAD (Pioneer's top-end/pro audio drivers and components) hardware is superb. -
How about this Guys?

Then came the AR-3 and AR-3a. You know, the speakers everybody tried to emulate for the next thirty years. They can be found at The Smithsonian Institute. Under the heading "Loudspeaker". I don't think there are any others under that heading in there. -
these too !!!
