So I have some speakers on CL and here is the type of response I have been getting.

"Sup, is your thing still available? I don't generally do this but you sounded cute in your listing and I'm drawn into you. I live nearby and up for anything. My only fear is that you might be a phony as CL is filled with them. So if you're indeed real, can we chat on my profile page? It's the safest way and very discreet. I'll message you as soon as I see you sign in! ;) "

Funny thing is the person who sent you this is probably named Ralph or Edward

I'm not really sure how the whole spamming thing works. What is it they're looking for when they respond to a CL listing like noted by the OP or when they simply just ask, "Is this item still available?" or "Hang onto the item you're selling for me at the listed price. I'll send a transporting company to pick it up and pay you, along with an additional fee for you holding it for me."?

Is it that they're just looking for valid email addresses that they can compile and sell to mass marketers - ie. online "pharmacies" - or is there some other devious plan they're trying to pull you into?

Actually, this can be a very dangerous scam. I get this stuff every time I post something for sale on CraigsList. I always post that it is a cash deal, for in-person pickup only. No shipping. No Paypal. No exceptions. Regardless, I still get numerous emails from people who want to pay me $100 over my asking price via Paypal if I will ship the item to them. They'll send me a Paypal with the money before I send it to them.

Now for the tricky part. Tell me why that's a scam? I'll have been paid, money in my account, before I ship the item.

The scammer will likely send you a fake email purporting to be from PayPal, showing that $****.xx has just been deposited into your account.
    My humble setup...

    ...is no more.

Nope. I mean you actually get paid. You log in to your paypal account, the money is there, you transfer it to your bank account. Tell me how you think this can this be a scam?

Ok, here's the answer. The scam is that the paypal payment that's coming to you is backed by a stolen credit card. And if you read your paypal customer agreement, you're on the hook for this, not paypal. So scammer contacts you offering you a lot more than what you're asking for your item, sends you a paypal, you verify that the money's in your paypal account, maybe even transfer the balance to your bank account, and ship your camera or laptop or whatever off to the scammer. Then a few weeks later, the owner of the stolen credit card raises a fraud complaint with their bank, the bank claws the money back from paypal, and paypal claws the money back from you. Even if you've moved the cash to your bank account. You'll wake up one morning and paypal has already pulled the cash back from your bank account.

This can't happen with an eBay transaction, eBay guarantees the transaction for you via seller protection. But if you use paypal for a private transaction, it's you who's on the hook for fraudulent credit card activity, not paypal.

So the moral of the story is... When you're selling on CraigsList, only do the transaction in person, for cash or money order. No shipping. No paypal. No exceptions. Every time.

Aha. Interesting. I always insist on meeting in person, and accept cash only. Forget money orders.

Be sure to buy yourself one of those ink pens to test money. I've known a few people who received counterfeit cash as payment for items they had up on CL.

Actually I don't see any reason why the same scam can't be pulled on Audiogon. Or, to be honest, here. Frankly, now that I'm thinking about it, chalk this up as a very good reason why people need to clear 100 posts before even being able to see the for-sale forums.

I get a bunch of emails on a CL post 1 minute apart with the 1st couple words of the listing with a ?
There are so many scams running, I hate to post on CL anymore. I don't know what their game is,
but I'm not going to play. Real responses ar the only ones to get a response. And no phone numbers until
    time to meet.

Unless the money is sent as a gift on pay-pal its my understanding that you are covered for fraud under the user agreement as a buyer and seller. They cant very well release funds to you after its went through their clearinghouse and ask for it back.

It seems there are plenty of scams on craigslist. I get similar replies to my postings as well.
