21x19 basement area: PSW110, 111 or 505

Guys, main basement area is 21 x 19 deep with another 14x14 area behind that, but more of a workout area. Looking to set up the main area with a sub. I read the 505 is mainly a HT sub while the 111 and 110 are a mix of music and HT. While I like turning up a good move, the wife doesn't have the same passion, so rarely is it up very loud for a movie, and neither of us really crank up the tunes to rattle the windows. Basically, I just want a sub I can turn up for movies and get the bass effect, but it doesn't need to rumble the whole house, and then have a bass that adds that depth when my son wants to listen to music. I was leaning towards the 111, but the 10 woofer in the 110 has me thinking that could do double duty too with giving me a little better HT setup. I was thinking the 505 might be overkill since we don't typically crank the volume. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrew

If strictly for HT, of the three, I would go with the 505. Maybe two for a room that size.

Just my opinion and possibly a few others, but none of the psw line is all that great for music. Check on the dsw line or micropro line for a better blend of music/HT. Also, your room is pretty big so don't be afraid to go bigger with a sub or it will just wash out. What other speakers you running anyways ?

I'm running front and L/R surround RC85i's with an RC85i center channel and two RC60i's for rear surrounds. So you think the 110 and 111 wouldn't be big enough, even though we don't crank the volume up real loud?

Personally I don't think it's big enough, but even more so I don't think it's as capable of a sub for music as others would be. The psw line was really more about HT than music.

ok, so you are saying at a minimum, I need to go with a 505, but for better overall performance the pro550. Really trying to stay around $200-300. I'm not married to the polk brand either, in case there are alternative suggestions.

The subs you listed in an area that size would be like trying to use a dixie cup to fill your bathtub. In that price range there is nothing that I can think of thats going to give you what you need. Think of all the space your asking a $200-300 sub to pressurize. Save some dough and do it right. ID subs are the way to go! Check out SVS and HSU, especially the HSU-VTF-15.

    Good luck!

That's a pretty large room to fill, so I would lean toward something on the larger side. You may not crank it all the time, but having plenty of dynamic headroom is a must.

    For what it's worth, I have a PSW1000 in ebony I'm selling for $350.

For a room that large, you'll need something alot bigger and badder, or 2 of them. You just won't be able to do it with a smaller sub. Maybe you should think DIY. Are you handy with tools?

I finished my entire basement and swapped engines in my truck....so mildly. :) Price is key here. What are you thinking amulford?

Jim, I appreciate the offer, I'm afraid the shipping to the chicago area would bring it higher than I woudl want to spend.

In that case, look for local Craigslist ads. There's bound to be someone selling something nearby, which will eliminate shipping altogether.

Parts Express has some DIY kits available that might work for you.

You would want two 505's in that size room. I'm running two in a dedicated room that is 19X13. They are awesome for HT!

Just wanted to mention I have a PSW125 I am selling for 200 and I am in the Indianapolis, Indiana area. I am open to offers as well and willing to drive a bit so no shipping is involved.

I also thought I would mention I know a couple guys who got the F-12 and were not too happy with it and upgraded shortly after because it simply didnt perform as good as they expected.

When it comes to subs, I have always been a fan of Velodyne. (Although I currently do have a Polk 505 as part of my 7600 surround). The good news with subs is you can buy one in your budget now...then add a second one later!
