Since i seem to be on a roll tonight.

About a week ago, turned on the furnace, all the vents immediately clogged with chewed up insulation, immediately turned it off, made my way to the living room cleaning and sealing them off because i knew right away what was happening.

Got to the living room, looked down to see and hear one of the little bas>?"rds trying to crawl up the flexible ductwork.

Needless to say, we got on the phone the next day, long story short, wed. or thurs. we are on the schedule to have our entire flexduct system replaced with metal, wrapped with r8 ins., instead of r4 as it is now, and sealed to the floor better than our 30 year old stuff is now.

Not delighted, but at least it was an easy decision with deb on oxygen, fighting for every breath, i dont care if it was 27000.

But you can trust me, i will be under there making sure this is done properly.

How is that going to solve the rodent issue?

Well, we all know you cant guarantee they wont gnaw their way through something, but with solid metal interior, instead of the soft flex, it would be far less likely.

Also, they will be constructing a better metal transition piece between the furnace/ac unit that sits outside and the side of the house.

Either way, after knowing these filthy disease ridden creatures of god for sure have been in there, theres really no choice but replacing, and this is the best option of materials.

I have four feral cats in the yards behind my houses, so I have no outdoor mouse, rat, or bird problem.

For inside every garage and storage building I have many, many trays of mouse bait. No live mouse traces remain.

PS. Kills rats and squirrels too.

If you've got that bad of a mice issue then you need to deal with that at the same time. All you're going to do is kick them out of the duct work and into another part of the house.

Metal duct will keep mice out of the duct work, but as others have pointed out those little buggars will head for other spots in the house.

I could never understand why home builders down there put furnaces on the outside of the house, let alone underneath the house. Someone want to take a shot at explaining that one ?

Guess I have never seen one outside the house down "here". I have seen them under the house in a crawl space before. And that was done for saving space inside the house. My last house had the furnace in the attic.

We have only had three incidents of mice getting in the basement in the 13 years since i have been here, the others were only one or two mice.

Not a frequent problem as i keep traps and glue boards in basement and checked regularly.

We live in an area with the woods right next to our house, so there are going to be mice and such, especially in the fall as its getting colder,

these guys just hit a weak spot that will be no more.

Soundfreak, I will look into what you are suggesting, anything to never see them again, thanks.

BTW, walking into the oxygen supply place to swap debs tanks out friday, and here goes a big fat black mouse right in the door with me, runs over and into a crack in the wall.

After alerting the woman what happened, and posting myself above the crack, lets just say i made an impression on him when he stuck his head out.

Forgot to update you guys, it ended up being 3200, they did not realize we wanted the main also in metal.

Anyway, the system is working so much more efficiently now, between the old stuff having hidden leaks and half the insulation, it took forever to warm up and cut off.

Now it is not only much shorter run intervals, The air doesnt dry out nearly as much as in the past.

combined with knowing the system is sealed from the outside better, the ductwork is sealed better and the air being better, gotta say im glad it happened.

What does the good book say?
