Questions on Denon 2802 AVR

Anybody know about the Denon 2802 AVR?? It seems to have 135 watts, but has pre outs for the mains (which is what i really care about) So i can run an outboard amp, and power a set of RTi12's for the front's.
The Center channel would be the only thing powered off the Denon. Thats the only speakers i would be running on here..at least for now. There is a "digital" input for this amp. Which on the new plasma TV stuff..there is only a "digital" optical output for the sound.
SO..not knowing anything about this, nor have done this before.. I Believe this should work?
I have a cable box, and a Blue Ray player, which both hook to the TV with HDMI cables.
So all i would have to do is get a "digital" cable. Plug the audio out (from the TV), to the Denon Digital in. Then the sound should be controlled by the Denon..Correct??
Once i shut off the TV speakers, then the Denon should control the RTi12's and the center channel.
Now i would guess i have to play with the Denon.."setup" to get the right sound out of this, but it should "seem" to work.
Is this a good AVR for what i want to do??? Is this AVR too old to handle the music off a Blue ray player??
I can pick these up on the bay for like 100 bucks..it would "seem" to fit the bill. But I just don't know enough about how all this works to just buy this. I maybe totally wrong in how i think this AVR should work, or how it should hookup with this Digital cable.
Any help would be wonderful..thanks.

I used to have one of those units but it eventually died on me. It's a decent AVR and your plan should work fine. If you can find a blu ray player that has multichannel analog output you can run that to the multichannel analog input of the AVR and receive the lossless audio format (Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio). I have a Sony Blu Ray that has multi-ch analog out. It's the BDP-S550. You can probably find one on eBay

Ok thanks for the info. But once you start talking "True HD" DTS sound or much of anything else..you pretty much lost me. I'm really just an "OLD" 2 channel guy, and don't know crap about this stuff.
Now i "figured" that..if i'm feeding the TV..with HDMI cables, from the Cable box and the Blue ray, well that should cover all bases..can't get much better. The only output from the TV..is the digital audio output, or Fiber optic. Which would seem ....hell it pretty much should be the best audio output.
BUT, what your telling me (maybe) is, this is NOT the best audio out put and i should take the sound from the Blue Ray player..?? Is that right?? What about the cable box..same thing???
Is the output from the TV..NOT good sound?? -
That Denon should have, or might have 5.1 (7.1?) channel INPUTS as well as Pre-outs. So what's being said is that if you have a BDP that has Mulit-channel outs you can connect those DIRECTLY to the Denon's Multi-channel INS and have the BDPlayer decode Dolby TruHD lossless sound.
Otherwise. That Denon should have SEVERAL DIGITAL ins, a few COAX and a few toslink (optical). Your equipment should have digital OUTS in addition to HDMI outs? Some pieces can be hooked up to your TV with HDMI and still pass sound through a coax or toslink to directly to the AVR.
The problem with trying to get surround from the DIGITAL out on your HDTV once you've hooked "everything" to it is that MOST TVs will not PASS 5.1 or 7.1 from the HDMI to their coax or toslink out because the TV is NOT equipped to handle more than two channel digital sound. That is not true of ALL HDTVs but of many, many!
So best hook your sources through their coax or toslinks to the Denon directly. Or if you have a mulit-channel OUT BDP, use that to the Denon.
Hope I'm not too confusing here!

When you play a blu-ray disk, it has a higher rez surround format called DTS HD Master Audio, and Dolbydigital +, your tv won't pass those signals on over a digital coax or toslink connection. Best to have everything hooked up to the receiver and let either the BDP or receiver do all the decoding. If your cable box has a digital out, go to the receiver directly, you don't need the tv involved in that at all.HT SYSTEM-

cnh..you pretty must lost me after your said Denon...LOL But what i got out of that is the TV, dose not feed more then 2 channel stuff out the digital output. So anybody that runs an HT system then, never connects the TV directly to the AVR. You only connect the Blue ray player to the AVR..for sound at least.
Is that correct??? Did i get that right??
If thats the case, what do you do with the cable box?? I guess just depends on what connectors the cable box has??
So lets see if i get any of this.... Now the Blue Ray connects to the TV with an HDMI cable...Then you need a Blue Ray DVD player, that has RCA outs for the sound (at least with this Denon AVR) Which would plug into the Denon..I guess TV inputs???
SO..the picture gets fed to the TV from the HDMI..then the sound gets fed to the Denon..thru RCA cables..
Am I right???
Did i get any of this right..or should i just give up and buy a sound bar....LMAO -
Now i went and looked at what i have. I have an old Magnavox Blue ray player. But it has all kinds of labels on it..HT DTS, Dolby....ETC. This has the HDMI cable to the TV..BUT has the Connections for audio out...2 RCA connections.....
SO i think this should work with that Denon 2802 AVR. Now if i get any of this. This Blue ray player should work. I just leave the HDMI cable hooked up (which feeds the TV with the Picture) Get the Denon, take some RCA cables....hook them up to the Magnavox audio output..connect those to the Denon...TV input maybe????
Hook up the speakers and i should be good to go????
This should work correctly..right guys??? This i can deal with. Trying to get the Denon to sound right..that may take a while and alot of playing around with...but should get it to work with just the front's and a center channel right??...at least for now. -
Does the Blu-ray player have a Toslink (optical fiber) or a digital coax output that you could connect to the Denon for sound input?Home Theater

NO..it only has 2 RCA audio out puts, white and red. Why is that bad?? Would this not work for some reason?????

OK..NOT a good answer... does the RCA cable hookup NOT run the "surround" sound from the Blue ray for some reason?? In that case, what the hell run the connection from the TV...Don't get it?? Either the hook up from the blue ray with the RCA connector works and you get what you need for the AVR..or it does NOT..so which is it?????

Sorry, I knew things would get to verbose.
OK, you have only TWO connections in the back of that Magnavox: HDMI and RCA (left/right).
So Dolby digital sound can only come from the HDMI. The RCAs simply mix the sound down to two channel analog and output that to the Denon so no surround from that.
Not many choices there. Some newer lower end BDPs are losing the DIGITAL outs assuming everyone runs HDMI to the TV or to the receiver.
The only choice left to you is to try and run the DIGITAL out from the TV to the Denon. You need to read the HDTV manual to see what kind of info the Digital out on the HDTV puts out--2.0 or 5.1. I suspect it's only 2.0.
But all is not totally lost because you can use Dolby Pro-logic options probably available on your Denon. This is the old circa 1990s way of taking a two channel source and simulating a 5 channel surround from the info. Check the surround settings in the Denon manual.
This will not be as clean as Dolby digital or as Dynamic as an actual digital surround feed. But it looks like you're stuck here because the Denon is too old?

Thanks cnh, that explanation i understand...LOL I did check on the TV digital out. It says it's "Dolby" but not sure if that really means it's 5.1 output. But thats fine. The AVR can make it work. I'm only putting fronts and a center channel on it anyway. I just don't care that much about HT. The only reason i'm doing this at all, is the Dialog on these new DVD's. The music just overpowers the Dialog on these, and the wifes sci-fi stuff is the worst. The stock Plasma speakers are just junk for this. With a good center channel, and the AVR set up right, it should solve that problem.
This is just not going to be turned up that much. Maybe for some music dvd's. The RTi 12's, may just be a waste of speakers for this. The old Advents may be a better choice, plus the Denon can run them, with out an outboard amp.
The cost of the used Denon and a CS-20 off the Polk ebay sight, is less or close to the same as a sound bar, so seems the better way to go. Plus if i do like this, i could always add "surround" speakers later -
The Advents have that fried egg tweeter (orange/red?). I have a pair in my basement. The Tweeter is a tad sharp so it might not be a total mismatch with a Polk CS20. Tell us how that goes! I run mine off an old TOTL Pioneer SX-3900 fluroscan and they sound pretty good. A very nice looking vintage speaker, especially if you have the wood veneer finish and it's still in good shape!

The Advents are the "anniversary" Models made in the 80's for what ever years they did this.(which i think is very few) There not the old 60-70 models. So i'm not sure what tweeters are in there. But i have had the large drivers redone about 2 years ago. The wood finish is great, and these things are dam heavy, for what was supposed to be "bookshelf" speakers. They sound great..will they mix well with the CS-20...that i don't know.
-
Let me restate that. The Old Large Advent "anniversary" edition were made in the 90's. They did redo the tweeters, change the x over, but basically used the same 10" driver..but they could handle 100watts. At least from what i could find out about these. They are really heavy speakers...there like 40-50 lb's each. Not fun to pick up and try and move...LOL
Now are they better then the original 1970 models....don't know. To be honest, the guys back then, that i knew, who had them..had already toasted them, trying to push them too loud with just under powered receivers...LOL
But the one's i have...sound really nice, will get real loud, and not have any problems..
