Ok, so my PS3 just kicked it about a month ago. I use it often for streaming, DVD player, etc. - rarely for gaming. I am missing having it in the bedroom and really don't want to buy a new one. I also don't want to send it to sony and pay the replacement fee. Anyone in the DC area feel like performing the fix for me? Of course I will pay you for the service. I don't have the tools or the time. Please let me know.

I ended up sending mine to Sony. Below are some PS3 repair sites that I had contacted first. The psr1.com tech was straight up with me and said the YLOD (yellow light of death) was a motherboard problem and that Sony no longer sold it's motherboards to repair shops, and because of that I would need to send it to Sony directly. Overall is was a good experience. Sony sent me a custom shipping box for free within a couple days, and then had it picked up. The motherboard was replaced, and Sony checks out everything in the unit before sending it back. They also included a 90 day warranty on the repair. Total cost for everything was 109.00. Turn around time was 10 days. That was 2 years ago and it has worked perfectly ever since.

You will need to initiate the repair process with Sony by going to playstation.com

Good luck with that. I've had my PS3 for about 4 years now. A few lock ups here and there, mostly due to incomplete firmware upgrades. Nothing a RESET didn't solve. But the unit is not used heavily. My daughter does occasional gaming, might watch a blu-ray here and there, stream some Pandora, or music from my laptop via PS3 Media Server, etc. My understanding is that if you maintain your PS3 it will function for many many years! Fingers crossed! It seems like a "solid" piece of tested technology.

He means checking for obstruction in the ventilation so no heat gets trapped and melts the internals. A can of compressed air sprayed at a distance does the job, on a 'side' note never place the ps3 vertically as it causes an obstruction in air flow. I used my ps3 for netflix in a room with a projector and shmelted countless ps3's, I used up the warranty and paid $100 just to get another 2 to fail on me. I eventually got sick of these crap refurb repair jobs failing and decided to complain to sony and the BBB and eventually they sent me a brand new ps3. I avoid browsing and netflix and make sure it is well vented and have had no problems ever since

I ended up looking for and contacting a few of the local craigslist guys and video stores. I decided just to bite the bullet and send it to sony. Not looking for somthing for free here and the $99 seemed reasonable to me. Its not an imperative piece of equipment in my house and I have had it for 5 years or more, so the investment of $99 to get a refurb unit is fine by me. It will be used for the Netflix streaming, blu ray viewing in the bedroom and probably a game every now and then.

    Thanks all,
    Shawn

Neflix looks good on it but the thing to remember here shawn is your going to get a refurb console that will probably break down again and its not your fault that the yellow light came on its a design flaw! Why should you have to work the hours just to hand over your cash to a multi million dollar corporation for some one else's F,up?

Contact the BBB and just see how many complaints there is and tell them about this and sony will call you telling you that they will give you a new one. They are well aware of this problem, Maybe all audio gear should have a yellow light so that when it comes on we just say ' oh its time the yellow light is on '

Live with himself? Did you read that thread because I paid the $100 to Sony for their mistake only to receive another 2 machines that had a reflow procedure done on them. I think I can live with myself for standing up for my consumer rights. In light of this I conclude that your statement is completely wrong and your moral compass is conditioned into delusion
