A few years ago I bought a pair of RTA 8TL's for $40 in ok shape. I have used them in various secondary systems and currently using them for my L and R in my HT.
They definitely have a dated look so I figured I would build some new cabinets out of some MDF I have had in my garage for some time now.
I decided that I would like them to be taller so the tweeter is a bit higher. They were originally 32 1/2" tall and I made my new cabinets 38" high. I also narrowed the front baffle to 8 1/4" from 9". The depth is now 12" from 11 1/2".I calculated the volume and it was very close to the original volume.
I am going to leave all the drivers the same distance from the tops. Which puts the tweeter approximately at the same height as the top mid driver in the original cabinet.
I plan on rattle canning them black. My goal is to make them look more modern and get the tweeter more in line with my center channel. I priced putting new caps and resistor in them and it was close to $80 dollars which is double what I paid for them. So I will leave them stock for now.
Any how I think this will be a fun project for this fall and give a pair of RTA 8TL's a new lease on life.

I like speakers that are bigger than a small refrigerator but smaller than a big refrigerator:D

Sounds like fun.Political Correctness'.........defined

Scrap the MDF idea. I'd suggest ipe, a Brazilian hardwood. Very nice stuff, cheap, and above all easy to work with.
Think I may be making some sawdust this fall, too. Fonkens are getting a bit long in the tooth. Might be going the OB route....Wristwatch--->Crisco -
Care to elaborate on what drivers you would possible use for the OB project.

I wouldn't have made the cabinets more narrow, that can affect their FR the same as moving the driver spacing, etc...
