Help Needed: Whole House Water Filter Recommendations

I am in the market for a whole house water filter system and am interested in recommendations and any other advice.

The house is a ranch with four full bathrooms outside of Atlanta, GA.

I might be able to help a bit, but you choose the word filter and that brings up some questions.

Like what are your expectations for the filter? What do you need to get rid of?

It's vastly different solutions for a location that is in the sticks, needing to purify pumped pond water vs a home in a subdivision that has a little too much iron in the water. Also, since you said filter, I'm assuming that your not interested in a water softening system?

Hi Scott,

I am trying to reduce the amount of iron that is coming into home from the faucets. The local government provides the water to our subdivision. Periodically, we get mild amounts of sediment due to rehabilitation of water pipes by the local government and am tring to reduce the "surprises" when I run the water in my house.

You are correct in your assumption that I am not interested in water softening; strictly filtration.

Well an iron removal and filtration system usually uses a resin bed which will have to be changed periodically.

I'd have a water test done first so you can find out what the iron content actually is. Then pick a system based on that.

Yes and no, those standards while in place to ensure a level of safety in our drinking water, don't cover the gammit of everything that could possibly be in it. Almost impossible for it to do so anyway, hence the aftermarket filters. Heard nothing but good things from people who use the Osmosis system and if your wallet dictates, I'd go for it.

The thing with whole house filters to keep in mind is the cost of replacing those filters and how long they will last.

I personally would only use it for water you are going to consume. It's not a very efficient method, it's actually kind of wasteful. Great system, but not for a whole house yet...

Not my line of work, but if your trying to filter various particles my suggestion would be to go to Home Depot, and get 2 filters. I'ld place them in line with each other, about 2 feet apart, and in the first use one of the less expensive filters. That woould trap most of the sediments, lime and iron. On the second I would use one of the carban filters, for finer particulate removal. You would probably double the life of the carban filter that way.

I have a reverse osmosis system for drinking water and ice maker, couldn't be happier. I have an inline filter but i think this will really be an improvement.

We had Kinetico (http://www.kinetico.com/) test our water then installed filters for our whole house and RO for our drinking water/refrigerators/ice makers...could not be happier. I'm sure any reputable company that recommends testing your water first then recommendations based on the testing would suffice.

Thanks for all of the advice to date. I have sent emails and left messages with several companies requesting them to come to home, test the water then make recommendations.
