Can you say "nut case"! What is this guy trying to prove, that he can, maybe, die? or perhaps make it?

Maybe tony is right. Let's just wait for the "real" Iron man suit and not be reckless!

Not when your supersonic, it's all heat. The SR71 used to kept over a pan to catch the fuel leaking from it. It flew at 80.000 ft. Not much air up there, but there was enough friction from what was to need it built that way.

Agree big guy, but he won't be supersonic off the bat, it's gonna take awhile. Wonder what the estimates are for his altitude once he hits that speed.

Dramatic to watch. Definitely not the professionalism that I grew up with watching NASA mission control. It's sad that our reach into space is no longer a big priority or affordable due to constantly being at war.

    HUH?!?

Our reach into space has been grounded by an administration hell-bent on making us equal to every other nation on earth... nothing exceptional about the U.S.... nothing to see, so move along.

I was on Crenshaw Boulevard for 5 hours yesterday watching as the remains of Endeavour rolled slowly past tens of thousands of cheering people. She had another 10 to 12 flights left in her, but was retired early due to funding cuts. As everyone cheered for miles, I had a few tears in my eyes because I felt like I was attending the funeral procession of an old friend.

787 billion should have gone to NASA instead of GM, Solyndra, Fisker, etc... NASA is the only entity of the federal government that has benefited this nation, and the world IMHO.

Congrats to the crew of Red Bull and the American ingenuity, "seat of the pants" bravado that pulled it off. I know an Aussie made the jump, but that guy has more courage in his big toe that most americans have in their entire bodies. We used to be like that, and it is what made america great. We need to be more like him if we are to reclaim our National pride once again.

Getting back to the topic, that jump was pretty amazing. I thought he'd lost his nerve there for a bit when he wasn't answering mission control about the checklist. Glad he made it.

I'm at work and so caught the end of it without audio. Is there a specific reason he pulled the chute just before breaking the record for longest free fall? IIRC, in another 16 or so seconds he would have broken that record. Also, what was the top speed he achieved? I googled 'speed of sound' and then when I came back to the video they had stopped displaying estimated speed. My search yielded 761mph, and from what they were estimating before he was at least close, if he didn't surpass that. What's the final word?

The New York Times says the Red Bull team is waiting do download data from a chip in his suit before they'll have answers to those questions.

I was wondering why he pulled the chute, also. But he was spinning pretty good in the moments leading up to it.

I do remember him spinning, and wondered if something was going wrong with that, but then I thought he leveled out pretty well for a while before pulling the chute. Oh well, can't wait to hear more definitive info on it!

Ya. That's what it looked like to me, also.

I THOUGHT... and I could be completely wrong... that I heard him say something about blacking out... don't remember if that was before or after the chute deployed. I might've misunderstood the transmission entirely. It was pretty garbled.

Wow, thanks for the link. That was a good read, and sounds like Nick Piantanida was one heck of a man. I'm very curious if the suspected depressurization and repressurization was the cause of his injuries or not. Certainly sounds like it fits the facts quite well.
