Howard Scott, developer of LP, dies at 92

Interesting article in NY Times on Howard Scott, a guy with musical training that got drafted into WWII right after starting at Julliard. When he was discharged he got a job with Columbia and they involved him in a project they had been developing to invent the LP. The 78 could only handle about 4 minutes of music per side. The early process of transferring the music to the LP is quite interesting. The article describes it better, but essentially it was something like they had to coordinate the transfer from a series of 78's that each contained 4 minutes of the material to go to the LP. The image I get is they had a bunch of turntables each containing a 78 with 4 minutes of the total. Scott would snap his fingers or something when it was time to weave in the next 78 into the vinyl. They later developed the magnetic tape which ended this. We often take for granted the developmental process. We often take for granted everything. Scott apparently also helped develop the CD before eventually retiring around 1993.
