Acoustic Foam in PR Section of SDA SRS 1.2 Cabinet?

When I removed the PRs on my SDA SRS1.2s, I discovered that the entire inner walls and bottom of the cabinets behind the PRs were lined with a gray acoustical foam material whose surface looks like egg cartons. At first, I assumed this was normal, stock material.
However, as I reflected on it, I began to question whether this foam had been added at some point because my understanding from reading various threads about mods to SDA SRSs was that you don't want damping behind the PRs.
So, I went to Lasareath's detailed photos of the mods he performed on his SDA SRS 1.2TLs, and I saw that in his picture of a speaker without its PR (carrying the speaker upstairs), there is no similar gray foam in the PR section of the cabinet.
Should this material be in these SRS 1.2s? Does it diminish bass performance? Or does it help control cabinet resonance or some other factor?
I would be grateful for any help. Thanks in advance.

I already removed it from the right channel speaker. I'll try to get some pictures of the left channel before I "strip" it. It will have to wait till tomorrow when I have daylight.
It was glued in, and it left some residue on the sides and bottom of the cabinet. I've scraped and sanded to get rid of most of it.
How thoroughly do I need to remove the glue and embedded residue?

I think the flash worked well enough to give you an idea of what this stuff looked like and where it was located in the cabinet. I also took a picture of the right channel from where it was removed.
In doing this work, I have discovered that these speakers were previously modified: 1) This material was added. 2) The batting has been replaced and probably augmented from stock. 3) Threaded inserts were installed for all screws in the baffle, but not for the binding post cups.Family Room, Innuos Statement streamer (Roon Core) with Morrow Audio USB cable to McIntosh MC 2700 pre with DC2 Digital Audio Module; AQ Sky XLRs to CAT 600.2 dualmono amp, Morrow Elite Speaker Cables to NOLA Baby Grand Reference Gold 3 speakers. I only wish I could get them back up and running by tomorrow night.
I'm waiting for neoprene from a supplier to fabricate new gaskets -- whoever had modified them put some black goo around the PR in the right channel and destroyed the gasket.
I am waiting for delivery of new Acoustistuf to replace the batting and a set of spikes and cups.
I've got everything else I need, unless some new wrinkle turns up. I have new crossovers (etc.) from VR3 Mods and a set of Larry's rings.
Looks like I won't get this done till the week of October 15-19, if I'm lucky.:sad:Family Room, Innuos Statement streamer (Roon Core) with Morrow Audio USB cable to McIntosh MC 2700 pre with DC2 Digital Audio Module; AQ Sky XLRs to CAT 600.2 dualmono amp, Morrow Elite Speaker Cables to NOLA Baby Grand Reference Gold 3 speakers. The sick thing about it is that the SRSs sounded great -- even with all that "crap" in them. How do you know it was replaced?Threaded inserts were installed for all screws in the baffle, but not for the binding post cups.
The SDA 1.2's and 1.2TL's came from the factory with threaded inserts. Larry's rings are better, IMO.Political Correctness'.........defined

How do you know it was replaced?
I don't think the batting was replaced, now that I've looked at it and compared it to the batting in my 1Cs, which I purchased new in 1989 and never opened up enough to see the polyfill till a couple of days ago. The 1Cs had two "cylinders" of white polyfill that was rolled up neatly and placed behind the MWs.
The SRSs also had two much larger cylindrical rolls of the same white polyfill, neatly placed behind the two columns of MWs. But, in addition to the two cylinders, an off-white, fluffed (not neatly rolled) quantity of polyfill was stuffed in and around everything in the upper 3/4ths of the cabinet. The left channel had much more in it than the right channel, and the left channel polyfill extended down behind the crossover opening and into the PR chamber. While the right channel also had the additional polyfill, it was not placed below the level of the crossover opening. All in all, it just did not look like the kind of work that would have been done in the Polk factory, and both cabinets were built by the same individual within a few days of each other (at least, I infer that from the name in various places throughout the cabinet. The SDA 1.2's and 1.2TL's came from the factory with threaded inserts. Larry's rings are better, IMO.
I'm glad to hear that those were "stock," and I am sure Larry's rings are a significant improvement. The threaded inserts are already a bit loose in the MDF. I shall install Larry's rings, which I have.Family Room, Innuos Statement streamer (Roon Core) with Morrow Audio USB cable to McIntosh MC 2700 pre with DC2 Digital Audio Module; AQ Sky XLRs to CAT 600.2 dualmono amp, Morrow Elite Speaker Cables to NOLA Baby Grand Reference Gold 3 speakers. I don't get it, either. What bugs me about it is that whoever did the work on the speakers damaged the opening for the right channel PR and then did a lousy job of remedying the problem he/she caused.
But, again, it was amazing how well these SRSs performed -- even with their cabinets stuffed with -- well, stuffed with crap.
I can't wait till I hear them with all the mods in place, but it will be at least two or three weeks before I can get it all done.

As Tom Petty sang, "The waiting is the hardest part"!
It'll be worth it - hell I'm excited for ya!"Science is suppose to explain observations not dismiss them as impossible" - Norm on AA; 2.3TL's w/sonicaps/mills/jantzen inductors, Gimpod's boards, Lg Solen SDA inductors, RD-0198's, MW's dynamatted, Armaflex speaker gaskets, H-nuts, brass spikes, Cardas CCGR BP's, upgraded IC Cable, Black Hole Damping Sheet strips, interior of cabinets sealed with Loctite Power Grab, AI-1 interface with 1000VA A-L transformer -
Since you got the PR out, I would dynamat it and JB Weld the magnets on it and all your other speakers, especially since it appears you've got some time before you start using these puppies again..."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." the first part ignore about the JB on the PR's magnets as they do not have a magnet....but he's right on the last part -

As the picture shows, the PRs are Dynamatted and ready to be reinstalled. So are all the MWs, and I have new RD0194s ready to install.
I'm now working on getting Larry's rings installed, and then I'll work on the JB Weld. I'm making a circular template to insert in the PR opening that will enable me to ensure that the holes I drill will be perpendicular (the cabinet is horizontal on sawhorses).
Toolfan66's thread about JB Welding the MWs is very helpful, but I'm still a little unclear on exactly where to apply the epoxy. If the baskets have rivets, then 8 spots. If no rivets, then 12 spots. I assume that these spots should be evenly distributed around the MW where the parts join -- back plate to magnet, magnet to the first plate, first plate (if not riveted) to the basket.

Today, I completed mods to my SDA SRS 1.2s -- except I will not install spikes until I am sure about their final location.
All I can say is the long process yielded great results, even immediately after completing the work. Just listened to Yo-Yo-Ma's "Yo-Yo Ma & Friends" and "Heartland," The Eagles "Hell Freezes Over," and Barenboim conducting the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra in Beethoven's 3rd Symphony, "Eroica."
As GlennDog said in post #8 above, i'm "grinnin' from ear to ear!"
I owe many thanks to Polk Club members who made it possible for a guy like me (Newbie par excellence) to get this work done -- DarqueKnight, Dorokusai, Toolfan66, F1nut, Lasareath, and VR3 (who did the crossover and binding-post cup mods) as well as all those who have posted their experiences and techniques for turning vintage Polk SDAs into world-class contemporary speakers!Family Room, Innuos Statement streamer (Roon Core) with Morrow Audio USB cable to McIntosh MC 2700 pre with DC2 Digital Audio Module; AQ Sky XLRs to CAT 600.2 dualmono amp, Morrow Elite Speaker Cables to NOLA Baby Grand Reference Gold 3 speakers. Right -- "too much" and "bass" don't go together very well in one phrase IMHO!
The more I listened to these speakers today, the more they opened up -- broader and deeper sound stage, freer and more detailed highs, richer and tighter bass with extraordinary timbre (from, for example, the timpani in a track from "Master and Commander").
I can't wait till those new caps and inductors really get burned in! The more I listen to these SDA SRS 1.2s, the better they sound. Diana Krall in "Live in Paris" sounds like she is sitting at her piano in my family room with her accompanists arrayed around her on an amazing sound stage.
