SDA and Balance Question

I have run speaker setup several times and never really thought about this. Does it matter to the SDA effect to have the left or right channel at a different level. For example, after running the signal the SPL has the right channel at +1.5 vs. the left at 0.0 at my ideal listening position.

I assume that would be the correct way to set it so I would hear equal from each. But, as always, I assume someone (everyone) on here has more experience setting the speaker levels. Thanks in advance.

Yes, it will but it will also depend on how severe the mismatch is. Small amounts might not be noticeable, but at some point it will be.

How does everyone else have their's set? Equal or fairly close? Any other experience with settings?

Sometimes I go back and check the balance level. It seems like there are recordings that are indeed out of balance. Then I took a look at one of these recordings on video. What I found was that the perceived imbalance seemed to be the placement of the instruments on stage. Everything electronically was in balance, it was the width of the stage that made it seem odd compared to other studio stereo recordings. Grace Potter has a few of these type recordings where on one song the trumpet seems out of balance when on the next it will be out on the other side. When cross referencing to the video it is clear that the musician was actually standing on the other side of the stage. I think it is possible that the gain on that particular instrumentalist is a bit higher than others giving an unbalanced feel to the recording. If one of these songs is being played when the auto setup is running you might get results less than optimum. I think if it were me I would auto tune with a wave.

Sorry...Mine is set dead zero at all times.
    Too much **** to list....

I keep mine at equal balance, but I have noticed what you speak of on some recordings too

I have noticed the exact thing thing with my SDA SRS2s. It seems like the right channel is slightly louder than the left in a lot of recordings. I also have a pair of SDA CRSs and when I hooked them up I noticed the same thing. I always thought it was because of the way my listening room is configured. Anyways I set my balance just slightly to the left, just slightly. I went back and forth several times with this before just settling on having it a tick to the left. Again I think my room has something to do with this also. It sounds great to me. Vocals are dead center with this setup and it seems very balanced left to right.

Probably is a room thing. I have zero issues and leave the balance dead center if I'm using a pre-amp with a balance control.

The Dared and my old Nakamichi don't have a balance control. The Adcom GFP-750 has a balance control but it operates differently than most.

I also have noticed that the sound stage can move left or right depending on the recording or on the room effects. I can't be sure what the cause is.

I like sitting in the center seat in a concert and I also like my home audio sound to be centered also regadrless of room effects or recording levels.

I notice this lack of centering most on some FM stations.

I am lucky to have a Revox amp that allows me to use my remote to experiment and adjust the balance. It's amazing to see how the sound stage can change slightly by small changes in balance setting. You really need to be sitting in your best chair while adjusting the balance and not getting up moving to adjust the balance.
