Anyone have one of these yet? I just bought one of these for my wife that'll be here Monday, am curious if anyone here has any thoughts. I did lots of reading up on comparisons between this and the Nexus 7 and they each has their strengths. Ultimately, the Fire HD ticked of more of the boxes that I think will apply for the wife, but we'll see how she likes it.

I came damn close yesterday, but I couldn't pull the trigger.

Can't go wrong with either the Fire or the Nexus IMO. Kind of wishing I had a 7" tablet myself. Just put Android on my 10" Touchpad so it's seeing a lot more use, but man is it a hassle. Either I have it on my lap and end up getting a pain in the neck from staring down at it, or I lift it up to save my neck and tire from the weight of it.

If I were choosing one of these 7" tablets for myself I'd probably opt for the Nexus given my techie nature and the more authentic Android experience on that device and the ability to install different ROMs and such. But for my wife, the Kindle Fire offers a more streamlined (and as a result more controlled and less functional) experience and it should meet her needs better.

I haven't seen them both side by side, but have seen them both in person and the screen on the Fire looks a little better to me. They both seem to have the same resolution, but I prefer the colors on the Kindle by just a bit.

I personally use an iPad as I like that form factor a little better but for what my wife needs the smaller form factor seems like the perfect fit.

Naturally you can root the Kindle Fire HD if you want more functionality out of it. Kind of closes the gap between it and the Nexus, although the Nexus is only $50 more.

Amazon wants you to buy stuff through Amazon instead of Google Play, of course, so they make money off of the sales. But it's Android. Has about as good a chance as remaining locked down as iOS--simply too many people focused on rooting it.
