Wifey wants ipod for Xmas. I'm a dinosaur in electronic gizmo's. It's mostly for music listening. Need suggestions on what to buy. There's lots of customer reviews on Amazon and the latest, greatest,(Itouch) has a fair amount of bad reviews. Really appreciate some opinions. THX.

The Classic or the Nano is fine. I think it all depends on how much music she will want to have at her fingertips. I don't care for the ipod touch only because the larger screen makes it easier to break if you drop it. Also for the price, the Ipods are the only Apple device that I decline the Applecare extended warranty. 1-year manufacturer warranty is fine for me. My wife and I have had about 10 ipods over the years.

If you think there would be any chance she would like to use apps (internet, streaming radio, games, etc) - get an ipod touch. Not sure what bad reviews there would be, but I wouldn't let them sway you one bit.
Otherwise you could always just get a shuffle or the (mini?) - whatever the non-touchscreen ones are.
Just out of curiousity - do you currently have cell phones? Could you just get an iphone and use that? An iPhone and iPod touch are 90% the same thing, minus the antennas and mic to make phone calls. Otherwise there is no difference. (Really, you could get any newer smartphone and put music on it)65" Sony X900 (XBR-65X900E)

I've had an iPod Touch for about 2 years now. The iPod Touch is a solid piece of hardware (physical and quality wise) and you really can't go wrong with it.
I've dropped it a few times and it has survived although they haven't been that hard of a drop. I also have a Belkin skin that I got from Walmart that fits rather tightly. Sometimes I can tell the thud it makes that the device hit on the skin. It definitely helps protect the device.
With an Apple device you are buying into the iTunes ecosystem. She will be able to get apps as Glowrdr mentions. That is generally good. However, I can't stand the iTunes app. Most people don't seem to mind it. I guess I just don't know how to use it since it gives me frustration each and everytime.
My Android phone is easier to add music too. However, the sound quality of the iPod Touch is superior to the phone.
I have liked my iPod Touch but may consider something else when it dies since iTunes bothers me way too much. Not sure if I will be able to find something I would consider "better" though.
