Maybe I should open this CD....still factory-sealed after 30 years.

Remeber when they 1st came out. The biggest discussions where why spend 3 times more for the cd, than a vynal album or cassette.

Actually, I purchased it about a year ago at a very good price....so good that I can't pass up an opportunity to have such a "curiosity". From all indications, this CD is the earliest CD pressing of this ELO album and it was the 24th CD title released by CBS/Sony in Japan, possibly in late 1982. I do have an identical, but opened, CD of this album.

Btw, I also have an unopened INXS CD still in its factory-sealed "long box". Remember those?

I agree the CD sounds better than it did when first released. Not that masterings are necessarily better today (except audiophile mastered CD's of course such as MFSL, XRCD, DCC, etc.), but the players have improved greatly due to advances in DAC technology. I wouldn't call it "true analog sounding" but it's getting closer and closer for certain.

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

It all depends on the listener. I for one feel vinyl has a way to go to catch up with CD/SACD. Now don't get me wrong, vinyl can sound excellent but just isn't my cup of tea. Opinions will vary greatly on the whole subject matter. You have to go with what sounds best to you & in my case vinly takes a back seat.

CD's, and to a lesser extent, SACD's, all tend to sound over-processed to my ear. The process of converting an analog original source, to a digital signal, then to a digital format, then being recovered digitally so it can be converted back to an aproximation of the original analog signal just makes no sense to me. I agree that the process has improved over the decades, but it is still not as good as a good quality analog setup.

And before you bring up the snap, crackle, pops and hiss, a good quality vinyl setup and LP's that have been well cared for and properly handled will be completely devoid of all those sonic imperfections. IMHO... listening to CD's is the sonic equivalent to watching paint dry.

True dat, some even with out of the ordinary box thinking. But from the time the first CD player was released, there were those who built them right and those who cheapened them up.

And as a long time vinyl spinner, you will never ever get rid of ALL the pops and ticks, regardless of cleaning, steaming, anti-static treating and grounding. And that is a fact, Jack. Unless you run the signal through a digital RIAA in a 'putie like some folks are doing.

Happy Birthday CD! Loving both vinyl and digital, and proud of it.

I see you concur with my statement that opinions will vary greatly on the whole subject matter. I take it you prefer vinyl...that's fine. Whatever format sounds good to you is all that matters. I'm in no way bashing vinyl, it simply doesn't cut it for me that's all.

Digital playback minus the laser can be a very enjoyable experience, even for the most harden vinyl lover.

I remember prior to the CD spending endless hours gleefully making compilation cassettes.
