my monitor 5's w/ peerless sound really harsh at high volumes. both tweeters are working. x-over has new Solens. particularly noticeable playing Colin James - Why'd you Lie (great song by the way if you like bluesy rock)

any suggestions that may improve on this?

Yep, get rid of those Solens.....horrible choice for the high end.

Try sonicap generation 1 or clarity cap. Might also consider upgrading resistors to Mills.

I don't know fo' sho' about the Solens, but Monitor 5s with the Peerless silk domes should be smooooooth to the point of sounding "laid back" relative to many modern designs (which seem to be designed to be flat in anechoic chambers, which almost always translates to "bright" in a real household room of any typical size and domicile-typical furnishings and wall treatments).

+1000 to both of these suggestions. The Mills resistor plays as large a roll as the cap in the high pass. I have been very happy with the Clarity/Mills combo in my 5B's. I started with the Solens and hated them for the reason you mention.
