i have an opportunity to pick up a mint adcom gfa-555 power amp to drive my polk rta-12b's. would i be able to use my kenwood kr-5600 as a preamp (with the jumpers in the rear removed) until i can get a deticated preamp? thanks.

are pre outs the same as line outs? (learning curve here!!) if i remove the jumpers, i effectively remove the tuner section, from what i understand.

Look at the jumpers. They should say Pre out and main in. If you remove the jumper you decouple the amp. (my Yamaha has a switch) Go from the pre out side of the jumpered connections to your outside amp and all will be well.

I am doing this in reverse with an Adcom pre to a Yamaha integrated Amp running decoupled.

Your amp is one that can be separated for function. The jumpers tie the pre to the amp. Remove the jumper and use either section independently at your will.

I have used Adcom GTP-450 and GTP-500 and had good results. They can be had for for around 200 used. I use a Pioneer C-72 Preamp and very happy with. I think you can find a nice denon or yammy preamp reasonal priced. I use a Sunfire Preamp on my main rig.
