These two players are on my list as I am sick of the ps3 getting used up for movies. The ps3 sucks for dvd's and this is my main usage as I watch alot of foreign movies. Does anyone have experience with any of these?

Have the Panny DMP-BDT320. Walked into BB, and was the last day of the 40% off sale on that model. The navigation screen takes time to get used too, and I think that model has the same type. Other than that it works great. Of course I was using one of those bundled in the box AVR's from an in box Sony HT systems that was 5 years old.

The S790 is a stellar performer PFB. The picture quality will best the Oppo (used as my comparison) and the sound quality is really good. The S790 is also very network friendly so if you want apps, streaming, etc. it does very well there also. The 4K upconversion is also where it shines, again you hear all the rave reviews about Oppo's upconversion with the 83/93 players so consider that a bonus if you still have SD DVD. Add the Darbee VP ( I have one also and WOW) you already have in the chain and you have one amazing image. Go for the Sony.

I just sold my Oppo today so yes the Sony is very well up to the task. The only thing I feel is missing is the Oppo build quality in the Sony, then again I'm not playing kick ball with the thing. I know you were comparing against Panasonic, but I only have a Panasonic BD 30 in my office which is not plugged up to anything.

+1, I took Shererd's recommendation and sold my PS3 and went to the Sony s790 and it was a bigger upgrade than I expected. I usually only watch blurays but i've tried a few dvd's and it up converts very nicely and sounds fantastic as well.

In that price range, I opted for the Denon BDP-1611UD (Thanks Mantis for the suggestion). Excellent player, stellar build quality, and weighs at least 10 pounds.

That hasn't been my experience, at all. Did you have a 1611 and sell it?

I had the 2500 and it was $1000 at retail but it only cost me $300 at the time. For an hdmi transport with a cd it hammered everything I put it up against

Out of curiosity what do you feel is wrong with the PS3's DVD playback?

The PS3 is jerky on panning and the upscale of dvd's is not very good as the image is quite hard looking. I also noticed the blacks on dvd was not as good as a marantz dvd player I owned and I compared many dvd's with the two

Wow, thanks for the valuable information. I had no idea that those types of things could be the actual player. I had noticed the jerky panning on mine, but didn't think to assume it was the PS3.

Its not always the ps3's fault, it my be the display, cables or even an avr. I will do some testing and give you a comparison once the sony 790 gets here and bypass the avr. The 790 has dual hdmi's one for audio and one for picture so it will get hooked up to the pj with a high end hdmi starlight cable from wireworld
