Understanding sub inputs

I'm really looking at a sub right now and, as is my way, I want to know everything I can about hookup so I can do it the best way possible. Basically, with my avr, what is the best way to hook up a sub to it?

The only inputs are RCA red and white with a crossover/LFE switch, so since my AVR is .2, I just hook both outputs to both inputs and use LFE mode on the switch? It also has the bare wire/banana plug jacks but I don't think I'd be using those...

BTW, the amp on the sub is a 500w Bash.

I would try it out of the preamp outputs ( the mains )
I figure you are using the avr's amp for the polks .
I dont have any experiance with your model but I use a sony 333Es I am using a externall 2-way crossover , the low end goes to a sub amp and the high end goes to my bookshelfs .
I think running 2 crossovers into each time cant be good and running LFE out is one and the bash is the 2nd one .
Low frequency (sub 100hz down ) is not in stereo .
PS : thats a nice looking receiver

I apologize for not making this clear. The sub has 500 bash installed into it replacing the original Polk amp. Its a psw1000 that the original amps were flawed and need to be replaced. There is no external amp for the sub. Would this still be your recommendation? Thanks btw, i love the 809 and its a really clean unit and jams the 12s really well! Can't wait to get the surround goingand experience that!!

All you need is one RCA cable from the receivers subwoofer output to either the left or right line level input on the sub. Turn the switch to lfe, adjust the volume about half way to start and see if you like the phase switch in either position. The crossover on the sub is ment if you connect speakers to the sub but since your running 12's, I don't see a reason for it. The line outputs is to daisy chain another sub so don't worry about that. The .2 on the receiver is for 2 subs, since you only have one, you only need one cable.

Oh, make sure you adjust the receivers settings for the sub too.
