I picked up a couple of SACD's and was really impressed by both so I thought I'd throw a review together in case anyone else is looking for some new multichannel music to try out.
First up is Michael McDonald's new SACD titled "Motown." As the name implies he covers a bunch of motown hits and really does a great job. It's a little hard to listen to him with out your mind wandering off and thinking about some of the excellant Doobie Brothers music from a few decades ago. His hair has greyed, and if possible, he seems to have matured musically as well. The surround usage is subtle, but works very well with the backup singers filling in the holes nicely. Definetly worth a listen if you are a Michael McDonald/Dobbie Brothers/Motown fan.
I've turned up David Sanborn whenever the local jazz station played his music, the guy can really let loose on the sax. I used to listen to his jazz show on Sunday mornings a few years ago called "Orange Juice & Jazz." He introduced a lot of music from old favorites as well as newer artists. So When I saw "Timeagain" in the SACD section I figured I'd give it a listen, Man am I glad I did!! Unlike "Motown" the surround mix on this disk is anything but subtle, and sounds great! There is so much going on at any one time that it's hard to describe, you just need to hear it.Some of the cuts are new, others are cover versions of older songs. "Tequila" is different played on a sax, but in a good way. The Stevie Wonder hit "Isn't She Lovely" is SWEET! Put on "Man from Mars", turn up the volume and enjoy!
Both are hybred disc's so anyone can play them, but to really get the full impact a SACD player is the way to go.
Give'em a shot and let me know what you think.
