Burning an American flag proved fatal for a Pakistani protester, who reportedly died from inhaling fumes from the ignited icon of independence.

Some 10,000 people rallied this week in Lahore, the capital of the Punjab province, to protest the movie trailer that Muslims say insults Islam, according to the International Herald-Tribune. One participant, identified as Abdullah Ismail, died after being taken to an area hospital. Witnesses said he had complained of feeling sick from the smoke from American flags burnt at the rally.

That's impressive indeed...wonder what that majestic piece of fabric was made of that it burns into something deadly? Or maybe it was just oxygen deficiency from the sheer quantity of burning flags pulling the air into intolerable for breathing. Either way, I'm glad to live someplace where extremism is, for the most part, limited to obnoxious and overzealous politicians and media surrounding elections...although those can sometimes be mightily unpalatable as well.

I wonder if it was one of those Made in China American flags. In which case it was probably coated with lead and other toxic chemicals.

The Flag fights back. Is it a person now?

Flags are something akin to Totems which is why they evoke such blood feuds. A huge literature exists on this subject!

Which is not to take anything away from the senseless violence involved in storming Embassies and killing U.S. citizens. Wrong in most "any" culture except that of those who do NOT "think"!

Each and every flag flies with the spirit of a Patriot that has given their life, their fortune, or their sacred honor to defend the liberty for which it stands. I am willing to bet that Flag was a Navy Seal or a Marine!

    Well said!
And as far as literature goes the only piece that counts in the end is The Constitution.

Not derailing (sort of related to the topic of flag burning), but it appears as if the French have been taking testosterone supplements lately and are going to publish some "cartoons" involving a Middle Eastern historical figure today (Wed).

If so, expect the French flag to become the flag-of-choice for burning over the next several weeks.
