Perreaux Users With Polk Vintage Speakers

I have been using Perreaux electronics with Polk speakers (SDA SRS1.2s and 1Cs) for over 20 years. I now am driving the SDA SRS1.2s with a Prisma SM6P MKII preamp and Prisma 750 monoblocks and the 1Cs with a Prisma SM6P preamp and a vintage PMF3150 amp.

I am equally loyal to Perreaux and to Polk, and I have been very pleased with the results I have gotten over the years. With the recent acquisition of the Prisma 750s I was motivated to begin the upgrade journey with both pairs of SDAs. Because the monoblocks are non-common ground, that compelled me to build a Dreadnought amplifier interface, and for the work others had done on that -- especially DarqueKnight -- I am immensely grateful, as I am for the existence of this forum.

I would like to get a sense of how many others are using or have used Perreaux electronics with vintage Polks and what their experiences have been. I also hope there are enough of us that we can have an interesting and, perhaps, useful conversation.

Power source for all components: Silver Circle Audio Pure Power One with dedicated 20 amp circuit to main panel.

Exercise Room, Innuos Streamer via Cat 6 cable connection to PS Audio PerfectWave MkII DAC w/Bridge II, AQ King Cobra RCAs to Perreaux PMF3150 amp (fully restored and upgraded by Jeffrey Jackson, Precision Audio Labs), Supra Rondo 4x2.5 Speaker Cables to SDA 1Cs (Vr3 Mods Xovers and other mods.), Dreadnaught with Supra Rondo 4x2.5 interconnect cables by Vr3 Mods. My best friend (now gone) introed me to Perreaux .
His Perreaux amp had meters (not sure the model #).
Killer with his LS Polks and passive Klipsch subs (2).
Not sure alot of people know Klipsch made passive subs that were really great sounding subs
(downfiring two 8's in each cabinet).
Anywho, the Perreaux sounded excellent with the Polks (Top end $ Yamaha pre).
He later bought an Exposure amp and pre-amp that was an excellent kit also when combined with the Polks.

I loved the combo, and will never forget it to be honest.
You don't hear much about them, but they are VERY good!

Trey, Thanks for the info about the post count, but mostly I'm interested in others' experiences with Perreaux equipment and Pold speakers -- although I'm ow so far into both that there really is no turning back.

I'm not sure what "Never Perreaux" means. Have you never listened to a Perreaux kit, or would you never want to use Perreaux?

I hope you're well and that I'll meet you at Polkfest.

Pepster, Thanks or your comments. I'm surprised there are not more Perreaux users. I think they sound great, and they are built to last. I took my oldest piece of Perreaux equipment (PMF2350 amp) into the US distributor (who happens to be located in Derry, NH; Fidelis AV) for a thorough going over, and even after 20+ years everything was dead-on spec.

By the way, the older preamps -- e.g., SA 33s -- have a great phono stage, but do not have a very good gradient of volume control for CD players. The newest one -- the SM6P MKII -- however, is great, at least in my opinion.

    Thanks, again.

Trey, I just had another thought: I suppose these posts don't count because this is the Forum Testing Area. Does that also mean that very few members will look at it? If so, then, perhaps, I should repost the thread or move it to the regular area of the Forum. I have a lot to learn!

Sorry - brain skipped a beat, I have never even heard of this brand till now but I checked out their site and their products look incredible!

This area receives verrryyy little traffic. I would recommend the 2 channel forum!

    I'll move it.

I've had Perreaux Integrated's a couple times and they're rock solid. I found them to be very neutral...almost NAD like in presentation if that helps. While not my cup of tea, it's a solid state winner but almost unknown in hi-fi circles.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Dorokusai, Thank you for moving this thread.

I certainly understand that any particular brand of electronics might not be any individual's "cup of tea," but I am surprised that Perreaux equipment has not attracted more attention among those audiophiles who want neutral presentation of the source material. This characteristic is, in fact, what I like about the Perreaux equipment I have used for years, and always with Polk speakers.

Does Polk ever do evaluations of various electronics manufacturers' products with Polk speakers? If so, I wonder what it would take to get Polk to do an evaluation with Perreaux equipment -- say, various Perreaux lines, including Audiant, Silhouette, and eloquence -- with appropriate Polk speakers.

It seems to me that Perreaux and Polk face some similar marketing challenges -- that is, the challenges of selling excellent products into markets where they are not as well unknown as their products deserve and where their reputations are not up to their products' quality and performance should command. A marketing partnership might even be good for both companies.

I'm beginning to sound like a Perreaux investor or employee: Let me assure everybody that I have no vested interest in Perreaux, just as I have no vested interest in Polk -- except, of course, that I own products from both. I just greatly appreciate products from both firms, and I would like to see them both prosper long into the future!

I've had a Perreaux 200iP integrated amp and matching CD player for probably longer than almost any piece of gear I've had. I agree, the products they used to make are very robust and reliable. They used to base a lot of their digital gear on a Rotel platform if I remember correctly. They left the US market for a few years but seem to be getting reestablished recently.

If I was to describe a sonic signature to the amps I've heard it would be very similar to B&K because their designs are both MOSFET designs. I wouldn't recommend using them with the older LSi series since their amps are a little warm sounding to me. Would definitely take the edge off speakers with metal dome tweeters though. I would recommend them with any of the SDA speakers. I have used the 200iP with a pair of SDA-2A's to very good effect. Plenty of smooth controlled power with those, but not such a good match with the big SDA-SRS compared with other higher output amps.

There is a Perreaux 6000B that just went on my local CL for $1500. Seems a little steep, but 300wpc is pretty good, and it looks like a very well built amp.

Zingo, The 6000B is a 1985-vintage amp. You can download a product brochure at this link:
    http://www.perreaux.com/assets/file/archive/050-6000B.pdf

$1,500 seems a bit high. I bought a PMF3150 for $1,200 or so in December 2011 -- also a 300wpc amp. I may be wrong, but I think the Perreaux "Professional" series amps had a fan in them back in those days.

One issue that seems to come up after 20 or so years with Perreaux amps of the mid80s is that the little blue light that shows that they are on burns out. This doesn't affect performance, but it can be annoying.

The reputation of Perreaux is also that the power ratings are very conservative. How conservative? I don't know. I never had a problem with the PMF3150 driving the SDA SRS 1.2s or the PMF 2350 (200wpc) driving my SDA 1Cs (for over 20 years).

I did have to upgrade to more recent preamps from late-1980s Perreaux preamps because they were designed for turntables, not CD players, as I understand it, and thus their "granularity" for volume control from CDs is not really sufficient.

    That's way too high.

Moose - As far as trying different brands at HQ, that would be NO. It took myself and others forever, years actually, to get them to step up their show gear with Audio Research and Bel Canto. Years....literally, years dude. I'm working my hardest to get the cables upgraded in the showroom to something that resembles logic and have begun sandbagging myself inside already. All these folks know high end and some actually live and breathe it like those of us here but it's not a rolling warehouse of demo'n all kinds of gear as it's not really a high priority for them honestly.

They FINALLY have a couple setups of seriously hardcore gear and I'm just happy about that....frankly, everyone here at Club Polk is responsible for Polk stepping up their game and getting really good stuff. Tenacity pays off....eventually.

HOWEVER.....At Polkfest's, these speakers often get all kinds of gear connected and the combinations have been magical over the past eight years. The brands have been CJ, Audio Research, NAD, Perreuax, Audible Illusions, Melos, Manley, Scott Nixon, Cary Audio, BelCanto, Parasound, Wired For Sound, Zu Audio, Sonic Frontiers, Anthem, B&K, etc etc.....to some super rare amplifiers like the CTC BBQ(Dorokusai) and Wright(Reeltrouble). Correct me on this Ted(RT1)....but you have some very rare tube mono blocks of which I'm referring but the specific name eludes me.

    Mark,

Thank you for taking the time to reply and fill me in on some of the history and culture. A newbie like me is a bit arrogant, I suppose, to make the kind of suggestion I made -- especially before attending my first Polkfest. However, when it comes to Polk and Perreaux ,I am an enthusiast who borders on zealotry!

Hope to meet you on Friday.

    Regards,

I know Ted was running some Wolcott Presense Monoblocks, but I think he has been experimenting with some VTI Monoblocks the last year or so. I'm need to give Ted a ring I haven't spoke to him in a couple of months. I hope retirement is still treating him well.

    Mark,

Does this mean that if a Polkfest attendee brings his/her equipment to the gathering, it can be connected to new Polk speakers for demonstrations? If so, I'd love to schlep my Perreaux Prisma 750s to Polkfest, but we're flying in this year.
