Really limited edition, and they were pretty expensive at retail. Also real gold, as far as I know.

But yeah, not really a true "listening" turntable, more DJ oriented IMO. That being said I think music sounds pretty good on my SL1200 MK2s with an Ortofon Night Club spherical stylus.

The 1200 was actually designed first as an audiophile turntable, but DJs noticed their rugged build quality and they took off in that realm. Because they were widely used in the DJ circles a lot of folks in the audiophile circles turn their noses up at them. They are actually very good decks and with the right cartridges, phono pres, and accesories and/or mods, are very good audiophile tables. I have one and love it. Having said that I don't think I would pay $3700 for one unless I was a serious collector and had money to burn. Those special edition 1200s are sweet, just not $3700 sweet to me on my budget.

Not surprised. Note that Woot.com sells thousands of "Bags of Crap" for $5.
There's a buyer for everything these days...
