Subwoofer pre-amp resistance and hook-up

Hay guise,
I have a student budget 2.1 speaker set up and my subwoofer makes a little rattling/rasping sound. I checked the voice coil and stuff and found no obvious reason. So I started wondering if it was because of my "I don't know this stuff, but I'll just connect this here and that there" -style set up.
I have a 8ohm subwoofer speaker, which is passive and self made. It is connected to a 4ohm subwoofer preamp, which is actually my old instrumental bass amp. This shouldn't be a problem as long as I don't run it too loud, right? Anyways, the previous is connected to a 8ohm main amplifier and I think this could be bad.
I wish someone could shed some light to this. Is it bad to have a lower resistance preamp than main amp and could this cause subwoofer rattle? Wiring could cause the rattle also, right?

Specifically what equipment are you using, and what order is it connected in? This will help us analyze your set-up.
The output impedance of the preamp would not effect the impedance of the passive subwoofer; however running an amplifier at a low impedance than it's rated is bad. -
Thanks for answering!
Main amplifier: JVC RX-5052S (http://resources.jvc.com/Resources/00/01/00/LVT1290-001A.pdf).
Subwoofer amp: instrumental GK Backline 600 (http://www.gallien.com/products_bl_series.html).
Subwoofer: Peavey Black Widow 1502DT ohm. http://www.peavey.com/support/technotes/misc/blackwidow.cfm).
I know it's very random. And uhm the connection order would be from main amp subwoofer out to pre-amp plug input and from pre-amp speaker output to the subwoofer. Most likely the rattle is caused by the speaker being so old and somehow broken, but I also wanted to make sure I wouldn't break my amplifiers (especially the GK amp) with my set up.
