Testing used equipment (receiver)

Generally speaking, how would you test the functionality/performance of a used receiver?

I found a great deal on CL, but my concern is that its too good. The seller says I'm free to test to my leisure. My main concern is that even if all the channels sound "ok", there may be some weird issue with decoders or something similar.

So how would you go about preventing being scammed and checking your equipment?

FYI, its a yamaha RX-A2010 for $650. Guy says its only a few months old, so I'm curious as to why he's selling.

Nice price. But I have no idea what kind of test you'd run. Does he have it set up and calibrated for HT use in his house? Because you'd need to hear it run through the paces on actual MOVIE tracks, at the very least!

Yeah, I figured I'd have to listen. My concern is that I'm a noob when it comes to decent equipment like this, so I'm not sure I'd even know what I'm listening for. Ebay prices are mid-upper $800's though (for open-box), so while its still a great deal, it's not quite as astronomical as I thought....

    thanks.
