I just moved my Plasma above my fireplace wondering if this may cause a problem as I start to use the fireplace this winter.

I think you should drop Dan (mantis) a PM on this. I'm pretty sure in all his "installation" experience he must've done this quite a few times! See what he says!

Actual dimensions might help as well to determine if it is safe. We use our fireplace in the winter and are considering a flat panel above it as well, I have checked the temp in the spot with the fire going and the heat seems to radiate straight out into the room and not conduct up the wall at all.

It would be safer with a gas over a wood burner FP. Turn on your fireplace at the usual force and see how much heat radiates upward. Personally, I wouldn't unless it's sealed real good and little heat comes out.

Well the first thing that comes to mind is a lot of neck strain who wants to bend there head back that much to enjoy there set. I know some people like this setup but I have friends who have this setup and I will not go to there home for a big game or movie because I want to enjoy it.

As for the heat well I use to service sets and it should not be too much of a issue but any smoke or heat would be a bad thing. Take a temp gauge and tape it where you want the set and see what it gets up to I don't think there should be any issue other then neck strain and to me that is a deal killer.

Ditto on the too-high complaint. My parents are contemplating doing the same (just bought their first flat-screen) and I'm trying to talk them out of it. Seems it's the thing to do for people that don't know any better. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Television sets should be near eye level from the viewing position.

Had a plasma mounted high up one time and it was very uncomfortable with periods of extended viewing

As much as I hate to admit it - sometimes I'll start a fire with the damper closed and smoke will billow up over the mantle.

I'd hate to have to think about what that might do to a plasma mounted over my fireplace.

We thought about doing this but after checking out our neighbors set up (above his fireplace) watched a couple of movies there, the wife and I decided against the neck bend to watch tv. Sure you can just use you eyeball muscle to look up without strain on the neck, but we love our fireplace for the heat in the winter, and enjoy the 55 LG Smart tv at head level. That's just us!!!

Reference level for a display should be one third below the eye line

Not sure but definately don't put it out in direct Sunlight. Ruined our 55inch that way. The UV rays kill it quickly like maybe a few months, forgot the timeframe. Now we get purple sparkes (very slight) and blue ray looks like red ray. Still watchable
