SL-2000 tweeter failure

One of the SL-2000 tweeters installed on My Monitor 10B's has failed the diaphragm has broken loose all around the base of the dome. What is interesting about this is this is a replacement Tweeter I installed in 1991, the other tweeter is an original (1989) and while the dome it's shelf is a little cloudy in areas it is still is working. I goes without saying both Tweeters will now be replaced. The RDO-194 is, of course, the replacement. I recapped the XO's on these 10B a couple of months ago are there any tweaks needed to accommodate the new tweeters. Frankly I am kind of relieved this has happened. I was going to replace these SL-2000's anyway this just forced the issue.

When I ordered the replacement MW6503's I ordered a second set in case the the originals in the other 10B decided to pack it in after all of their years. With the replacement of the tweeters I wonder if I should go ahead and change out the old MW-6503's with the new ones which would effectively give a brand new set of 10B's. I have already reported there is no difference in the sound between the new and the old that I can hear.

I do have a request I know dimensionally the RDO-194 is different then the SL-2000 has anyone posted photo's of the old tweeter being replaced by the RDO driver. I would like to see how much relief is necessary to install one. I have a nice set of gun stock in letting tools that should do the job nicely.

I replaced SL2000 with RDO194 in my 1Cs, super easy, they're the same dimensionally. sounds much better, less bright.

that is good to know it is a little unclear in other threads when a RDO-194 is being installed which tweeter is being replaced. I'll give Polk a call tomorrow.

Over at AudioKarma yet another flame war broke out over which sounded better the SL-2000 or the RDO-194. I reported what was thought about it over here and I felt like a cowboy being thrown out on the street from an old west saloon.

Oh please don't flare that topic up again......
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

Don't worry things happening at AudioKarma are best left over at AudioKarma. I am happy that Polk still has replacement parts for my old 10B's. I have a set of W-35 Warfedales that are not so lucky.

Yes mine, all four, went right in my SDA 1c no problem. People will argue with you about the 6503 (all the MW's in fact) the new ones not being is good as the old. I would like that see a frequency test comparison myself. I have bought the older ones for myself simply because I wanted them to match. In your case the two new ones would match.

I think the modern MW-6503 might be better because of one thing. The wires coming up out of the voice coils no longer are attached to the speaker cones. instead the voice coil hookups go directly to the spade connectors. This tiny amount of stiction is removed from the speaker cones.

Most of the members there are too old to hear distortion in the upper frequencies.

I was taking a close look at the bad SL-2000 and it looks like it might not be to hard to rebuild providing you can get the diaphragm/coil assembly to do it. with. fortunately that is not necessary.
