I am trying to "warm up" the sound in my 2ch system. Would a tube CD be the most effective route?

Let me put it this way, I'll never own a CDP that doesn't have tubes.

Ok then! How about some sort of buffer until I can save up for one of these pricey things?

It will with the right tubes. Tubes are just part of it. You need a good transport, good electronics (caps, clock, power supply, etc). Isolation from vibration, an of course good quality signal and power cables.

Some tube CD players have tubes just for show. They need to be in the analog output to be effective. Tube rectification in the PS is also a big plus.

I used a Musical Fidelity buffer and it did help take the edge of some of my recordings. The price was very reasonable. Some buffers use tubes that don't have a lot of variety for rolling.

I have seen "Yaquin" products pretty reasonable on ebay. Made in China I think. Are these crap? Just want something to "warm up" the sound a bit.

Most of us mere mortals can't afford a $6000 or $7000 cd player.

I love my Jolida JD-100, can be had used for about $500 or new for around $900. The right tubes really make this player warm things up, nothing worse then listening to a bright player, the Jolida is very musical.

The Jolida is a nice unit. Another one to look for used in the $900 to $1000 range is the Lector 0.6t. Uses 12AT7 tubes as the true amplifiers (not as cathode followers) and no opamps. Extremely musical and enjoyable to listen to. Responds well to a little tube rolling

Since you're wanting to warm things up have you considered a moderately priced tubed pre-amp? Of course this is assuming you run seperates. If not a buffer is a nice step.

The Yaqin CD3 which uses 6SN7 tubes would be a great choice, better than the CD2 since in general there are better 6SN7 tubes vs. 6AK5.

One thing to consider is that many lower priced tube CD players do not use the tubes as an output stage. They are a buffer, with op amps doing the heavy lifting of providing gain. Just something to consider.

grant fidelity has a tube dac. for 350 that also has a built in buffer. you can put your cd coax out to the grant, you can calso put put it between your pre and amp if you also choose to instead. or, you can use it as a preamp!

YOu missed it. i just sold my jolida that i had for sale here with upgraded ei tubes.

Have to agree there. I run one myself for this very reason. My model was the short-lived step up from the 100 that is probably being replaced by the 200. It wasn't cost effective to sell my model, so they upgraded the 100 with more tubes, etc. at a slightly lower price than the Music Van below (I got mine on discount in any case, so I can't complain--it really does "warm" things up, I have yet to hear a DAC Box sound "warm" (without tubes) though some are excellent at what they do).

BTW, Sal, if that's what you and Jesse are running, it must be pretty "amazing"! Out of my league. I'll have to be satisfied experimenting with tube rolling!

I also have the Jolida CDP but replaced the tubes w/ the Psvane ones.

These tubes really took the sound to the next level. Highly recomended.

That was the price new for the player. Start out with something smaller like a Jolida and if you like it and want to see what other stuff can do move up the chain. Jolida's can be nice and you can find info on doing mods to them to get more out of it.
