scored a pair of 5JR this week on ebay for $30. and while they are rough around the edges a bit, i find $30 to be pretty cool.
the have some surface scratches and such. and since i have "freshened" my 11Ts and know the potential, i hear that the 5JR's could use a little updating. that being said, they sound pretty darn good. i already have a PSW-10 sub which in my room would be necessary, but that being said, i am very impressed with the size of the soundstage they have and for their age how even they sound.
i would really like to refinish my 11T's so i bought these to experiment with removing the vinyl laminate and re-applying veneer for practice, but i now realize, in the spirit of club polk, that i will surely end up taking these as far as i can with updates.

wallet be damned!

Wow! Those are nice. If I were you I would spend a little money on some new caps and resistors instead of veneer. Veneering those puppies is far from easy and you can spend a huge amount of time and money
"learning". Then again, I'd you are really into learning and have the time, go for it.

they photograph well, but the sides are fairly scarred. crossovers will be done..... i used Sonicaps and Mills in the 11T's and was thinking of trying Clarity and possibly Mundorf for these.
I realize refinishing will be a lot of work. but i usually have a winter layoff and am looking for a project. obviously, no big hurry...

very nice! what tweets are in yours? and also what stands are you using? i plan on doing most likely about everything i did to the 11T's with the exception of rings but not in a major hurry, just as i can afford. i am just climbing out of the rabbit hole i fell into getting my meager 2 channel system up and running...
also curious who modded and restored you 1200?

I recently upgraded a pair of 5Bs. I had a blast doing it. I used Clarity PX in tweeter circuit and Solen in the woofer section. I used a Mills resistor. I upgraded to the RDO tweeters, and added Armacell gaskets and Hurricane nuts as well. The sum of all that was a significant improvement in performance. I have the urge to go to wood veneer as well. Hope you keep us current if you go for it.

    Good luck.
