Help needed for new Ipod Touch Gen 2 user! Probably simple answer but...:)

Was given an Ipod Touch 2nd gen by my wife and I am getting smudges all over the screen. The ZAGG invisible shield is suppose to be the cat's meow but I don't understand how the touch portion of the Ipod will still work with a shield/cover in place..??
