I have to work at a mall today, that used to take d.l.'s in exchange for access to the roof. I guy I work with says, that is illegal.
I'm assuming this depends on the state, but it sure doesn't sound kosher to me?

I'm not aware of any workplace procedure such as your describing.

Who is doing this? The building owner?

The only people authorized to withhold your license upon request is Driver and Vehicle Licensing and law enforcement/border guards.

    This isn't all that uncommon.
I used to have to leave my license at the guard station for the main
computer room for one of the Airlines. There have been some other
locations where for a master key they required the same thing.
They don't have a legal basis for it. But no license, no access.

They can ask, but in the end they can denied access too.

And then again they are not taking License.... They are holding License.

You might find that he doesn't need your drivers license, that he just needs some form of ID. Do you have a company ID with photo? A lot of times when I'm going into a plant, they will ask for my drivers license for ID. I just hand them my company ID and have never been denied access. The only places I go that require the actual drivers license are a couple military installations, or military contractors that have federal security clearances for their employees.

How would you get on the roof to work, if you didn't drive that day and left your wallet at home because you weren't driving.

If your self employed, there are several websites out there that will let you make custom ID's or a local print shop can make them for you. They will just need 300dpi camera ready art.

150 dpi at reproduction size would be completely sufficient

that's the resolution of newspaper photos

300 is magazine or other "slick-paper" quality, but you certainly don't need that for an ID photo

+1... If they don't like it, they can go back home.

Bottom line- they set the rules- it's their building.
Be glad they aren't asking for proof of insurance, citizenship,
and a safety course. And for government buildings, a security clearance.

It's like flying on a plane; you don't HAVE to comply with what they are asking, but you don't HAVE to fly either. If it's their game, it's their rules...

I have done work on Malls roofs some 15 years ago, and I can recall they asked for my drivers license even back then. After 9/11 I think everything got a bit tighter as far as that goes.

There are buildings in the Dallas Fort Worth area that were tagged as possible targets after 9/11.
Any contractor walking into one is going to get a hard time. Welcome to the way things are now.

In Texas, you do not have to legally give them your license to hold on to. I'm not sure if it's illegal to ask. Either way, they also dont have to let you on the roof one way or another...so...
