Anyone using RC80i's (in-ceiling) for rear surrounds?

For WAF reasons, I am planning on installing some RC80i in ceiling speakers for rear surrounds on my first 5.1 setup. Does anyone here have any experience with these or other ceiling speakers? If so, did you use an enclosure of any kind and was there any benefit? I would like to use an enclosure just to keep away insulation (my attic is filled with this loose, cotton-ball like stuff) but I would like to know if doing so would have an adverse effect since the website claims the driver features "infinite baffle tuning". Any insight would be appreciated.

    Simontan:

I have the rc80i as my surrounds and they work amazingly well. My neighbor came over to listen (he has B&W speakers for his complete set-up) and was shocked how good it sounded.

I actually just ordered from www.Efuctional.com the Wood Technology SC-1 enclosures (they're scheduled to arrive today). I know Bluedog has these and he said he hears more bass, mid-range, and surround effects now. Do a search for his thread on the matter. I'll give you my opinion when I have them installed.

    Hope this helps!

    Jeff,

Have you installed the enclosures already? If so, what's the verdict?

If you can, go with the 85's. For some reason, the rectangular's sound better than the rounds. You might check out Paradigm Reference in walls. I put 4 of those in my bedroom and they sound very nice.

The enclosures did help the sound, but m opinion not enough to warrant the purchase. Since they are used as surrounds and not mains I don't think that enclosures are necessary.

I would definately recommend the rc80i as surrounds, though. I love that there is nothing bulky around and everyone who comes in the house and/or hears them compliments them.

    Good luck!

I've owned the RC60i for two years used as rear surrounds first with my RT series front speakers and now with my LSi's as mains.

I don't listen to SACD or multi-audio so they serve their duty just fine for surround purposes.

Just remember to set them to small. I prefer to give them a couple db boost over what the calibration sequence yields for some extra surround fill that just sounds more robust and natural to my ears.

I've actually been waiting for the LCi in-walls to come out. After seeing the retail prices on these puppies though I might just keep the RC60i's for a bit longer. I can't really perceive any timbre matching problems when I watch movies; at least to my ears.

Oh yeah... I almost forgot. They are in the "infinite baffle" installation in the ceiling. One tip, make sure and double sure that before you cut the hole in the ceiling that you have enough clearance between the ceiling joists and that the 2 X 6 is not in the middle of your hole. I almost made this rookie mistake but caught myself in time.
