Best Buy score and problem Help needed

If you are a lawyer or have played one on TV, I need your advice.

Long story short version:

I picked up an open box Denon AVR-4311 at Best Buy last week. I asked the associate how much for the Denon and he checked the computer and told me the price was 350.00 and I get 40% of the price for open box. I knew the unit retailed for $2K. I said I will take it. Paid and left. The receipt shows a Denon AVR-1613.

The video board on the Denon is bad and I need the receipt for Denon to fix. I went back to the Best Buy and told them I needed the receipt to say AVR-4311. They were shocked and asked the manager what to do. I was told to bring the unit back in and they will correct the receipt to show the proper model.

My concern: Could Best Buy be setting me up? Is there anyway for them to not let me leave with the receiver after I bring it in? Could they say it was a mistake and not let me have it? I will not let them take it from me and would probably end up in jail!

Should I take it in or just keep it as is? Anthing to worry about here?

Thanks, Jeff

Find the guy who sold it to you and go over the whole scenario....and record it on a cell phone.

I would take it in, I'm sure you'll be fine. The transaction is done, they're not going to go back now and say it was a mistake and try to reverse it, even more so since it's now broken.

How much is the new board?

If you're that worried, just eat the cost. Hell you already practically stole the unit, just come up with the money to fix it and I'm sure you're still WELL ahead of what the unit is worth.

Agree to agree. I would def just eat the cost on this one. I don't think they would change the receipt to show the correct model. They obviously miss tagged it.

It could be the network card. That was a well documented issue with the 4310. For some reason the network card failing has impacts to the HDMI card. Can you get an IP address?

Open box items usually do not have warranties and have to be accepted as is. I would try to go that route, just dont get disappointed if the company doesnt fix it anyway. As far as going back to Best Buy, you have a product in your posession, that they sold you, even though it was mislabeled, you have documentation showing their errors, even this thread as proof of their error. Go back, get your receipt corrected, make sure to be short and huffy, not beligerent, just out of patience and mildly disgusted, they wont want to push you as hard aas they might if you went in sheepishly. One step at a time. It is yours, you bought it, they made the error you want corrected on paper.

Look at it this way. How can the take it from you if your paper work shows it is an AVR-1613. They would be stealing from you.

So, you bought a $2000.00 AVR for $210.00 knowing full well the salesperson was quoting you the wrong price and now you're trying to get it fixed under warranty, but can't because the receipt shows a different model number? That's Karma biting you in the arse.

If Best Buy wanted, they could probably go after you for obtaining goods under false pretenses and use your comments to prove it.

I don't think Best buy will help at all. There was an error in how the receiver was listed in the inventory. Best buy has a record of you receiving the AVR 1613 (hence the price).

There is little, if any, documentation they sold you the 4311.

If they help you under the current scenario, then people would buy a broken unit off ebay, buy a new one from BB, then try and fix the broken unit under the legit purchase.

    Amen to this.

If I were you I'd drop any thought of taking it back in and maybe they'll just let it go. If you persue any action they will keep it and give you one that your receipt says you have. If I were them I'd want you back into my store so I could get it back.

Wow, alot of you guys have really bad opinions of Best Buy...

I told you in post #3 that you'd be fine and looks like I was right.

Over the years I have had SUPERB experiences with Best Buy. They're not the cheapest game in town, but when I've had issues their customer service and warranty service have always been superb. Maybe I've just been lucky, but that's what it is.

I used to like Best Buy a lot.

Then they turned me away when I tried to take Mr. Chung shopping with me.

    WTF?

They probably suspected he'd use that lack-of-nose to push in the tweeters on all the floor model speakers. That's my guess.

I hope your just kidding about wanting to take your dog into their store. As much as I can appreciate a dog lover's desire to never leave the side of their pet, I don't feel the same way about their animal. On the other hand, it would sure make life more interesting if everytime we went to a store our pet got into a fight with someone else's..

I can think of a few reasons not to shop somewhere, but not letting me take my pet onto their store? Really?

And, Best Buy really isn't that bad compared to some...where are you going to buy mass-market gear (excluding Magnolias), Walmart?

    I didn't say I don't shop there.

    I said I don't like them.

It's all academic anyway, as Mr. Chung prefers the Apple Store.

Just have it fixed & eat the cost. As far as Best Buy is concerned, their receipt says you bought the AVR-1613 model. That 4311 model you want to show up with could have come from anywhere. Count your blessings & move on.

its funny my friend works at a store that people always bring in their pet dogs (retail store) and he is very allergic to them. Even when he takes meds he still can have reactions.

It's funny when people who bring in the dog get mad at him because he will still try and help but will stand further away so he doesn't start having a reaction. He just loves it when the person keeps getting closer and closer because their dog "just wants to see him" and get offended when he says he can't.

I love dogs and cats myself, is it needed to bring them everywhere, no. They are not an accessory and shouldn't be treated as such.

I have no doubt Denon will fix it. They told me to get the proper receipt and call them back. They have to go through the diagnostics with me on the phone which includes resetting the unit (I already tried, but they have to be on the phone when I try), and then authorize sending it to them for repair. Open Box items at Best Buy carry the full manufacturer warranty.
