Has anyone tried the W4S mPRE? If it's half the performance of their DAC and pre combined, should be very good, right?
It's more than half the performance of both. I own a mINT and IMO, it sounds very nice, and is close to a STP-SE/DAC-2 combo.

Stick a decent pot followed by a simple buffer or gain stage at the output of that nice Burr Brown eval board you have.

I agree with you Fred. However, when I hooked up a receiver a month ago, I sat on the couch that night with the remote thinking, "Wow. This is very nice." Volume control, input switching, multiple ins and outs...

Is it lame that I'm kind of getting tired of manual everything even if ot means squeezing out those last few bits of sound quality?

Why not go with an older anthem avm and use a stello with it. They all sound the same and I had the avm40 and it sounds very similar to the D2 that I have now. I see avm30's get sold for peanuts and they have great analog sections so why not use it as a dac.

I would have went this route suggested by falconcry when I was looking for a DAC but I want to keep the HT and 2 ch stuff in diff rooms

Well if that's the case ... Maybe I need to put a Dodd tube buffer in my current passive preamp, and finished building out that 24/192 DAC board... The passive pre already has 12VDC going to it, so a 12V buffer should be an easy install at the output of the attenuator.

Well I,m not so sure Rich.Someone that DIY's a top shelf DAC might be considered more of an extremist!Of course that is not to be confused with a completely different subset, the elitest.

    Zingo,

Have you looked at the Perreaux Audiant DP32 USB DAC Preamp?

You can check it out at this link:
    https://store.perreaux.com/us/products/audiant

I don't know whether it has all the features and functions you have described in this thread.

This seller had a demo unit for sale on Audiogon for $2,000 up until a couple of weeks ago.

I've used Perreaux electronics for 20+ years with great pleasure. If this pre has what you need, I would bet you'll like it. Perreaux has a reputation for delivering near-tube-like sound with digital electronics.

Power source for all components: Silver Circle Audio Pure Power One with dedicated 20 amp circuit to main panel.

Exercise Room, Innuos Streamer via Cat 6 cable connection to PS Audio PerfectWave MkII DAC w/Bridge II, AQ King Cobra RCAs to Perreaux PMF3150 amp (fully restored and upgraded by Jeffrey Jackson, Precision Audio Labs), Supra Rondo 4x2.5 Speaker Cables to SDA 1Cs (Vr3 Mods Xovers and other mods.), Dreadnaught with Supra Rondo 4x2.5 interconnect cables by Vr3 Mods. Interesting look pre/DAC, and I've never heard Perreaux equipment, but I've heard good things.

However, I may have something else in the works that would be more "Fred Approved" than other options I was looking at...

    Zingo,

My understanding of Perreaux's US marketing and sales strategy is that you can now audition gear from their web site for 30 days and then return it for a relatively small restocking fee. You might want to try this route to hear what Perreaux's pre/DAC sounds like in your rig.

In any case, I hope you find exactly what you're looking for!

Well, here is the new (to me) zero-gain preamp I just picked up:

Maple faced, white ebony knobbed Dodd Tube Buffer with factory LDR volume control, Platinum Sonicap upgrade, 6H30Pi tube, and C-Tek charger with Battery.

Let's see how it pairs with my Dodd Hypex amp...

Nice, I'm using something similar, but with a Goldpoint attenuator and Claritycap MR on the output.

I'm interested to hear how the Dodd LDR with 6H30Pi buffer sounds compares to my current Dale/Caddock MK132 shunt attenuator with 6SN7 buffer.

In the last 6 months I've run a decrete resistor stepped attenuator based passive (with and without 6SN7 buffer), an ALPS pot based passive (with and without 6SN7 buffer), and a B1 buffer with SMD based stepped attenuator, and this Dodd buffer with LDR attenuator is by far the best. I wasn't able to do critical listening last night, but the few songs I played through had much more micro detail, and presented everything better at low volume. I know that the Dodd buffer with the 6H30Pi is very well designed, but I'm sure the LDR is also the magic I'm hearing.

Don't tell me that... Nothing like spending $100 on two caps. But I have been impressed by every other level of ClarityCaps, and this Buffer does deserve the best...

I've been doing some real listening this evening, and this buffer is amazing top to bottom; it's been quite a while since I had a new component which let me hear new detail and subtlety in my music. More smooth, more dynamic, harshness or grain, more depth, more goodness... :)
