I was thinking I wanted a 2 channel, then I talked to a member selling a 5 channel, and now want that amp, but then I did some research and found that these same amps I am wanting are selling for just as much as they did back in 2001-2003.......?????now besides fine wine and gold, how this is possible is beyond me and I can't seem to wrap my head around it all. Then I looked on eBay and saw so many amps and heard so many opinions saying that I should do a 2 channel, then others say get a 5 and be done with it, so I'm just holding out until that killer deal of a lifetime rears its ugly head. The amp I have is okay and will do until that time. Now I see the same exact amp I want on my local craigslit in Dayton Ohio, and am temped to go see/hear it in person but not having my speakers there might make it tough to tell how it sounds?? A little confused, but glad to be able to share that here. This forum is great!!

Only you can decide if you want to spend the money or not for something that will improve your system tremendously and that you will have for years. Take a cd that you know very well with you and go check out that amp. If you hear details that you thought were previously missing, then you will be hearing what a separate amp can bring to the table.

I am still puzzled how the same amp I am looking at here for 300, sold for that same 300 10+ years ago, and just saw another of the same sell for 400 on eBay..right after I was asking that seller questions to get another opinion. He later sent me a message that his amp just sold locally, so I know these HK's are good!!! I think I'll be checking out the one here on CL today, so I'll have a better idea of what it's all about. I may just sick with what's working!! This hobby can get crazy!!! Like.when are we happy???

Johnny: good gear holds its value over the years. Unlike receivers where new tech comes out every 6 months and they get outdated, a good amp design lasts for a very long time. Amp design's dont change that much compared to other components. Just like speakers, some SDA's are selling for 85% of what they sold for new 20 years ago.

The market dictates what gear is worth so if the amp your looking at is still selling for near its new price it simply means your looking at some decent gear .

The market is nuts!! One thing I got in the asking stages is Way too much information:confused:, but your answer was a breath of fresh air, and I do believe that I am looking at a couple of good amps now. Of course the local route is more comfortable for various reasons, pricing and shipping being a huge factor, so wish me luck in my audition of this one this morning. 11am and I am bringing a pair of RT1000i's with me. They are easier to move than my RT 2000i's!!

Some like Mcintosh tube or fisher tube or marantz tube sell for 10X + as much as they were new!

I agree local is much more preferable, since you can both ensure it works, and make sure you like the way it sounds. The only other location I would buy an amp from personally is another forum member, or ebay but only if the price is right and even then still tenatively. This forum as well as a couple others tend to both give good prices to members, as well as package items to withstand a bomb. I appreciate that especially with something like an amp.

So if an amp pops up here I would personally have no issue with buying it here. I would just make sure its shipped insured on the chance the UPS monkeys get at it.

I am sure your on info overload, but if I might ask, what amps are you looking at (or what are you looking for in the amp) and what speakers will they be used with?

I was looking at an Onkyo until I talked to the seller of an HK PA5800 here on the forum. This guy knows his stuff, and got me digging the idea of his 5 channel he is selling. I'll be looking at the same amp here in my backyard in a half hour that has a lot less use and for a great price, so if that checks out I'll be saving some dough, and times like these, one has to save where they can..am I right?? Off and running..wish me luck!!

The market does that with cars, I don't see why other well built consumer items would be any different. Just like cars, you need to look at how well an amp was made and how many were made. If you have any great example in it's market that was no produced in many numbers, it will most likely hold it value or even appreciate.

There is a McIntosh MC2105 on my local CL that the seller is asking $1300 for in great condition with original wood cabinet. That amp was sold from 1967-1977 and the last retail price $799.00.
