I've been looking at tablets, and it seems there are still complaints with various issues on the Samsung, Asus, Toshibas etc. At double the price point of a Fire, they're not winning me over.
So, since my primary use for this is going to be storing tech manuals in pdf. I just want to make sure this thing is going to work for this simple function.
All the bells and whistles that come with it, are gravy for me. I just need something that will boot up fast, and load doc's fast, without being sluggish.
Just looking for feedback, both + and - on this tablet. If you think the stylus, screen protector, etc. are worth it, please let me know as well.
As always, TIA
I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!

Honestly, check out a PlayBook. I love how it renders a PDF. It will meet all your other requirements as well. Only exception is quick boot up; Takes a good 2 mins to boot up. However, with the QNX operating system, you'll never need to shut it down.

I got my wife a Kindle Fire, she enjoys it. Not sure on the pdf thing. Me, if I am buying, I like Sonys, however, I hear Microsoft has come out with something to kill the ipad, etc and so on. And really, laptops will always beat these tablets in the present and immediate future. I guess readable size and processor speed would be a good thing to compare. Too, any other needs or uses to help you decide.

At the same price the nexus 7 seems like a much better buy, I don't own either but from what I've seen and read you should take a look at the nexus or at least wait for the next Fire to come out.

I agree. I have been very close to getting a Nexus 7 several times in the last week, but the Kindle Fire 2 is supposed to be out any day now. My biggest problem with the N7 is the lack of a micro SD slot, so you are stuck at 8/16 GB storage (which is even less after the ROM takes up its space). You also can't use a MHL adapter with it for HDMI out (but I doubt I would use it that often). I'm afraid, though, that the new Fire 2 wont have a micro SD slot either because the first one was lacking it. Amazon and Google are really pushing their cloud storage services and by omitting the micro SD expandability options, you are almost stuck using them. I just want a 7" quad-core tablet with a 1280x800 IPS screen and a micro SD slot at a reasonable price. Is that too much to ask?

We have both...the Nexus 7 is by far a better machine. Matter of fact it is a very impressive little booger.

Everyone and their brother is pushing this idiotic cloud notion. It is simply another way to lock people into their system, how quickly people forget that these companies can change their minds, go out of business, change formats etc. Then you're stuck either with lost media or useless media.

Hard drives are getting cheaper and bigger than ever I'll take that over Amazon & Googles cloud crap. And I like Amazon.

If I were to buy a tablet, and my wife has an iPad 2, I'd get a Nexus 7 or the more expensive Galaxy Tab.

I'm also thinking about getting a tablet. Kinda waiting for this http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en/us/default.aspx to see what it's all about before I decide.

I was going to mention the Touchpad myself. For PDF viewing it should be fine. Mine has both Adobe Reader and Quick Office HD on it, both of which can view PDFs. Pretty sure they both came pre-installed, but not entirely certain on that. There is also an Amazon Kindle app on it. But again, I can't remember how much of this came with the Touchpad or what I put on there myself. Glowrdr?

Just found out myself. QuickOffice and Adobe are pre-installed on the TouchPad, and the Kindle app is available as a free app. BTW QuickOffice HD can open docs from cloud services such as Google Apps, Dropbox and a few others if that interests you. I find it quite handy to keep many of my docs available in the cloud to be able to open them from my various devices or a web browser.

I likely caved on the "wait for Kindle Fire 2 release" idea and sprung for a Nexus7. I only have the 8gb version as well, and while I agree with the notion that I don't want to buy into the lock into the Google or Amazon cloud, I do buy into the cloud idea...just my own cloud. I can access my desktop anywhere I have internet to get to my files right on the tablet, so the 8gb local hard drive isn't terribly necessary.
