Questions on Monitor 7s

I have the bug to track down a pair of Monitor 7's to upgrade as I will probably send the 5Bs to college with my son. I found some 7's about 2 hours away. I talked to the guy but he was not at home (at a concert so hard to talk). He said they were 7B's and he was original owner. They apparently have the Peerless tweeters and he recently installed new MW from Polk. He said they are Rosewood color but did not know if it was wood or vinyl.

I was looking for some sort of referrence to understand the different drivers in the different versions and then wondering if they could be wood? I did search the forum but did not find the answers. What should I look for or ask about? I know from my experience with the 5B's that different versions can have multiple speaker and crossover make ups. Normally did the 7B model have Peerless tweeters? And is there any chance that the finish is real wood vs. vinyl? Finally did teh 7's come with optional stands? He said he had stands with them. Any other input welcomed and appreciated.

Here is my pair of genuine 7B's with Peerless. Yours may or may not come with original boxes. The stands did come with them and are mandatory to properly position the speakers off the floor and to time align the drivers. The way I determine if they are wood veneer is to lick your finger and rub it on the surface. Real wood will instantly absorb the moisture whereas vinyl will smear. Depends on whether they are heavily waxed though.

I just picked up a pair of 7's with peerless tweeters I wish mine had real wood veneer

When I was doing some reading on here about the 7, many owners felt that the 7 was the most musical of the polk monitors.

Exactly, that is why I am leaning toward the Polk Monitor 7, the other speaker I am looking for is an EPI/Epicure bookshelf.

The 7b series would be what you want to buy. I own a pair I bought new in '79 with the peerless tweeters. Over the years I have changed the drivers to the new MW6503 (8 ohm) from the original MW6500 due to magnet shifts and the old drivers becoming unusable. Transport of the older speakers can result in this happening. I have upgraded the crossovers also. Played them at Polkfest last year with some 450watt tube amps and was blown away at how good they still can sound. I had to purchase my stands separately as they did not come as a package when I bought them originally. The vinyl replacement with veneer is a project that has been on my list for a long time....... As far as the comparison of the original driver to the new production driver. There spawns a slight tone difference with the 6503 being slightly darker at first, but I actually preferred it once it was broken in. It brought some more depth to the presentation. Great speakers either way.
