Rotel RCD-855 - What's it worth?

My RCD-855 wouldn't start up when I set up my old audio gear.

For $20 the local stereo shop diagnosed a bad power supply and for another $70 they'll replace it.

But I wonder if it's even worth the trouble.

Setting up a Squeezebox Touch with a Grant Fidelity TubeDAC-09 in the next few days and thinking about going without a CD player entirely.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

If you have the remote--I'll buy it from you if you decide to not fix the player.

I don't think I still have the remote, George. That's not to say it's not in a box somewhere, but unless I stumble across it...

The 855 had one of the best DAC chips made, the TDA-1541A, along with the Philips 4/19 swing arm laser assembly. The two combined to make the 855 a superb sounding and very reliable lower cost cdp. I'd definetly spend the money.

Not me.....the SB with a dac will change the way you listen to music and you will be sucked down that hole looking for ways to up your digital game. Plus once you have all your cd's downloaded, you can put away all those cd cases and free up more room. I think I have spun maybe 10 cd's in the last year and a half since going digital.

I'm really looking forward to getting my SB, which hopefully will be here this week.

    I just bought a TubeDAC-09 from Blair.

You reckon there will be an audible difference between that and the SB internal DAC?

Looking forward to hearing it both ways...

The SB dac in the touch is fairly good on it's own, but we all know dac chips alone don't account for the end result. I'm guessing that tube dac will take some of the digital edge off and warm up the sound a tad. Get yourself a good digital cable too, along with decent IC's comming out of the dac, don't skimp. If ya need help with setup just ask, plenty of us use a SB. Now would be the time to breeze around some SB threads and get your read on. Happy listening.
