Just got a killer deal from a fellow Polkie on this unit (thanks again Jeff). Sounds excellent paired with the Kenwood. Thing is, I can barely turn it past 9 o'clock without severe ear trauma! Please tell me this is normal.

it can be a bad potentiometer in the Adcom pre-amp.
    Make it simple...Make it better!

Based on my past experience with Adcom gear, I'd call it normal. Had a GTP-500 years ago. Had it paired with a GFA-535. Volume control was about the same. Clips lights on the 535 would come on near 10 o'clock.

It has to do with the impedance matching between the 2 components. It has nothing to do with something being broken or not working properly. If it's that bad look at getting a different pre-amp or amp. Some gear mates together better than others. It's just a fact that some gear works better or worse together.

Which of the (3) outputs are you using? Did you read the manual about the different output connections?

For the $, the Adcom GFP-565 is a solid preamp with a great sounding phono pre. I ran one for a few years. When i had it with a integra amp, i didnt have to turn the volume up as much to get it loud but, when i changed amps, i had to go 1/2 way on it to get the volume where i wanted.

What H9 is saying,"It has to do with the impedance matching between the 2 components. It has nothing to do with something being broken or not working properly. Thanks for the replies. I really am not complaining, just wanted to be sure it was normal. The SQ is great. I am using the bypass outputs. CD is louder and a bit more forward than Phono, but sounds good either way. I have to turn it up more to get same volume when in Phono.

I am glad you like the sound. About 10 o'clock with a carver TFM-45 paired to RTA15TL filled my house. It was the same with a NAD 2600. I didn't have a manual to ship with it as I got it without one. I think I used the normal outs.

If you want to return it, just hit me with a PM and I'll even pay for shipping. But my guess it it will sit in your system for a bit because it really does sound nice for the price.

Oh I am definitely hanging onto it for a while. Rabbit hole is a bit wider now with all of those nice Adcom amps out there:cheesygrin: Thanks again. Great packing, killer price and a pleasure to talk with.

Here is a link to the owners manual, perhaps it will help explain the hook-up.
