Question about inductors...

I have noticed alot of "modders" replace inductors with film inductors...

In my travels so far I have yet to see a match to stock inductors available in a film inductor. The DCR is so far off it is not even funny...

Am I missing something here or what?

Nope. I only use them when when I need a specific DCR or am designing with them.

Some people claim they sound better, I haven't been able to tell a difference.

Agree with Face. Much ado about nothing and I stick with usual knowledge. Funny to see folks finally get into inductors after about 4+ years of talking about it on my end. Oh well....maybe I just don't post enough about that type of thing or post fancy in depth graphs, innocuous waveforms and conversations like DK. He far more gifted in all things in depth than I could ever strive to be....it makes me feel even dumber.

And you shouldn't be, not only will it affect the driver's efficiency, but transfer fuction/Q also.

I have just been scratching my head this entire time because a modder (not to be named) uses them on all of his mods... and I mean the only suitable replacement I have found for most of the inductors I have found are 21 awg perfect lays... and I usually have to get those from the UK or special order...

When you start building your own speakers, as in becoming a grassroots builder, get involved in the rocket science of it all....until then Trey, just follow your instincts and solid knowledge and replace components with known better components. Don't over think it all and you certainly know what your doing man....relax.

    Of course...

I just wanted to make sure I was not missing something... I have been scratching my head over maybe perhaps there is a different source and such... but yeah... I usually stick to using the stock inductors to be on the safe side :)

I'm all for stock inductors being replaced, depending on application but it's also not something that HAS to be done. It's a bit more than just swapping a value for a value. You have an understanding of that, most here do not. Face is someone who really gets it but I wouldn't go sending him 100 PM's about building things after this....he's moody.

I so hope that actually happens.

I have contemplated about building a small monitor - but I have quite a bit of reading to do... unfortunately there is only so much time in the day.

Well from day one I have always concentrated on matching the DCR, purchased the appropriate equipment to match this... just makes sense!

I bought into the inductor upgrades several years ago as well, when I was using the Erse super q's in my 2btl's. I restored them to stock when I sold them and now have the Erse's in my 1C's. I'm building CRS+'s now, and am using a Solen for the 16mH and DK's special-order Jantzens for the inductors on the board. The nice thing about the CRS+ is that the coils can be used as-is. The painful part with these inductors is when you have to start unwinding the coils to get the measurements right, which requires an expensive meter. I'm really looking forward to hearing what the Jantzens do.
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.
